Cherry Hill, N.J. - Highlighted by two bronze medals, the Boston University women's rowing team competed at the Patriot League Championships on Friday in Cherry Hill, N.J. BU advanced all three of its boats to the grand finals and finished fourth in team points behind PL Champion Navy, runner-up Bucknell and third-place finisher Holy Cross.
In the early morning heat races, the Terriers needed to finish in the top three of each of their races to advance to the afternoon's grand finals and all 3 boats delivered.
In the first race of the day, the Terriers' varsity eight boat, coxed by senior Eline Vermeulen and stroked by classmate Cydney Marks-Nicholes, finished third in their heat with a time of 6:55.1 behind heat winner Navy (6:49.7) and second-place finisher Georgetown (6:54.5). BU finished ahead of Lehigh (7:10.3) and Loyola (7:41.0) to advance to the afternoon's grand final.
BU's second varsity eight boat raced next and again finished third to advance to the grand finals. Coxed by sophomore Marlaina Miller and stroked by freshman Lily Bettencourt, the 2V8 finished with a time of 7:14.5 behind Navy (7:03.5) and MIT (7:13.6). The Terriers' 2V finished ahead of Colgate (7:40.2) by open water to advance to the grand finals.
BU's varsity four, coxed by sophomore Emily Avrick and stroked by junior Sam Woo, won their morning heat to advance to the grand final. The Terriers finished with a time of 7:58.8, ahead of Bucknell (8:04.6), Lehigh (8:26.4) and Georgetown (8:35.6).
Later in the afternoon, in the varsity four grand final, BU finished third with a time of 7:39.3, behind race winner Navy (7:22.7) and Bucknell (7:28.3) to earn 7 team points. Navy earned 9 points with the victory and Bucknell received 8.
In the second varsity eight grand final, BU again finished third behind Navy and Bucknell. BU finished with a time of 6:52.8 to earn 14 points, race winner Navy (6:44.2) earned 18 points and Bucknell (6:52.8) was second and earned 16 points.
Heading into the final race of the day, the varsity eight grand final, the Terriers were in 3rd place in points with 21 behind Navy (27) and Bucknell (24). Holy Cross was in 4th with 18 points.
In the V8 grand final, Navy trailed Bucknell over the final 100 meters with the PL Championship in the balance. The Mids pulled even over the final strokes and then ahead at the wire to win the grand final and the championship by a foot. Navy's time was 6:33.1 with Bucknell clocking in at 6:33.4. Navy earned 27 points with the victory and Bucknell earned 24 with second place. Holy Cross finished third with a time of 6:41.1 to earn 21 points. BU finished fourth with a time of 6:46.0 and earned 18 points.
With results of the close V8 final, Navy was crowned 2015 PL Champion with 54 points. Bucknell was second with 48 points while Holy Cross and BU were tied with 39 points each. Holy Cross took the tie breaker based on the V8 grand final results to finish third with BU finishing in fourth place
