HAMILTON, N.Y. - Despite senior Nathan Dieudonne earning a double-double and four players reaching double-figures, the Boston University men's basketball team dropped an 85-78 decision at Colgate on Wednesday night.
With their third straight win, the Raiders (9-9) improve to 5-2 in the Patriot League, while the Terriers fall to 10-10 (3-4 PL) after seeing their three-game win streak snapped. Coming off a thrilling overtime win at home on Monday, BU outscored Colgate in both the paint (32-28) and in second-chance points (12-2), but the Raiders, who last played on Saturday, finished with a 14-7 advantage in made 3-pointers for the victory.
Dieudonne posted 14 points and hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds to become the 20th Terrier to reach 600 career rebounds. Sophomore Cheddi Mosely hit three treys en route to 17 points, while both junior Eric Fanning and freshman Kyle Foreman tallied 10 points apiece. Senior John Papale added six assists, as BU finished 25-of-53 (.472) and 7-of-22 (.318) from behind the arc.
Trailing, 44-38, with 17:19 left, Colgate converted on back-to-back 3-point plays and used 10 of Austin Tillotson's game-high 22 points to go on a 24-6 run over the following six minutes. Jordan Swopshire went 5-of-7 from behind the arc to add 16 points, while Alex Ramon added 16 points off the bench. Malcolm Regisford nearly had a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The first half was a see-saw affair with six ties and six lead changes. BU was down, 24-20, following a 3-pointer by Jordan Robertson and responded with an 8-0 spurt behind a Mosely and Foreman trey. Mosely added his third of the half for the 31-27 advantage at 2:47, but Colgate flushed two more shots from behind the arc and had a layup by Francisco Amiel to enter the locker room leading, 35-33.
During the first 20 minutes of action, the teams combined for 19 turnovers, and BU went 8-of-11 at the line compared to Colgate's 1-of-1 performance. The Terriers continued to attack inside to start the second half, opening with a Dieudonne layup and free throw.
Fanning followed Foreman's 3-pointer with a layup and free throw to give BU its largest lead of the game at 17:19 (44-38). The Raiders then caught on fire and at one point was 13-of-16 (.813) from the field to pull away. Robertson had a steal and fastbreak layup to give Colgate a commanding 74-56 lead at 8:21.
Down but not out, the Terriers chipped away at the deficit and pulled within 10 (75-65) at 5:18 on a free throw by sophomore Nick Havener. The Raiders though reeled off six straight points with the help of four free throws to hold off the BU rally.
Having yet to lose a game in regulation at home, Colgate finished the contest 28-of-48 (.583), including 14-of-25 (.560) in 3-point territory, as the Terriers hit six more free throws (21-15) than the Raiders
BU will next return home and host defending PL regular season champion Bucknell on Saturday (Jan. 23) at 1 p.m.
