BOSTON - Despite sophomore Nick Havener earning his second consecutive double-double, the Boston University men's basketball team fell to Navy, 83-67, in the Patriot League home opener at Case Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
Having to use their ninth different lineup of the season with the absence of 2015 Patriot League All-Rookie honoree Cheddi Mosely due to injury, the Terriers drop to 7-9 and 0-3 in the conference action. The Midshipmen featured five players in double figures to improve to 11-5 (2-1 PL).
Havener tallied 11 of his 15 points and six of his game-high 11 rebounds in the first half to help BU overcome an early 16-point deficit and enter the locker room ahead, 30-28. However, for the second time in three games, the Terriers could not maintain the momentum after grabbing a halftime lead. With the score tied, 52-52, at 8:11, the Mids went on a 16-4 run over the following five minutes to pull away for the victory.
Junior Eric Fanning and freshman Kyle Foreman finished with 15 points apiece with Foreman adding three steals as well. The Terriers were held to 38.5 percent shooting in the second half and eventually finished the game 22-of-53 (.415) and 7-of-22 (.318) from behind the arc, respectively.
Shawn Anderson, Will Kelly and Tilman Dunbar each had 16 points apiece for Navy. Dunbar added five assists and a team-high four rebounds to help the Mids win the battle at the boards, 31-29. Jace Hogan and Tim Abruzzo added 13 and 11 points, respectively, off the bench with both adding four rebounds.
After senior John Papale hit a 3-pointer for the quick 3-2 lead, Navy scored 17 straight points to pull ahead, 19-3, at 11:39 on Dunbar's layup that was preceded by three consecutive treys.
Down 21-5, Papale, Foreman, sophomore Eric Johnson and Havener all hit a 3-pointer during a 16-2 run capped by Havener's layup at 5:05. The Terriers scored the final six points of the half in the last 75 seconds with Havener hitting a quick jumper at the buzzer after grabbing the offensive rebound for the 30-28 advantage.
The second half was a see-saw afair with Fanning giving BU its final lead of the game, 50-49, at 9:08 on the Terriers' seventh and final 3-pointer of the game. He one minute later tied the contest for the sixth time (52-52) with a pair of free throws.
Dunbar followed with a short jumper and helped push Navy's lead to double figures for the first time in the half (66-56) at 3:55. The Mids went 20-of-24 from the charity stripe in the final 20 mintues after taking just two attempts in the first half to claim the victory.
The Terriers will next remain at home and host defending PL champion Lafayette on Saturday (Jan. 9) at 1 p.m. The Leopards last year eliminated BU in the quarterfinals after the Terriers eliminated Lafayette in the 2014 quarters.
