TURNING POINT

  • Down by eight with 2:51 left, the Terriers staged a furious rally but missed a game-tying 3-point attempt with 20 seconds left.
  • After junior Cheddi Mosely cut UConn's lead to two (50-48) with 4.6 seconds remaining on a 3-pointer, the Huskies successfully in-bounded the ball, went 1-of-2 at the line, and fouled BU while sophomore Kyle Foreman tried to bring the ball up the court.
  • Foreman hit the first attempt and missed the second one to set up a long rebound, but the Huskies won the battle for the ball as time expired to seal the win.
THE SETUP
  • The first half was a grind-it-out 20 minutes of action with both teams holding one another below 27 percent shooting.
  • The Terriers led by as many as five (13-8) at 10:01 but were held to just one field goal the rest of the half, as UConn entered the locker room, leading 21-17.
  • BU had 11 first-half turnovers but out-rebounded the Huskies, 26-16, to keep the game close and limit UConn's second-chance opportunities.
  • Senior Eric Fanning pulled BU within one (32-31) at 9:47 in the second half on a converted 3-point play with a tough layup and free throw, but the Huskies responded with a pair of 3-pointers to push the lead back up to 38-33 at 7:49.
  • The Terriers later trailed by three at 5:40 (39-36) and 2:09 (44-41), respectively, but Christian Vital and Jalen Adams each hit critical jumpers to maintain some distance.
GAME NOTES
  • Fanning went 7-of-11 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 at the line to finish with 21 points while adding a season-high nine rebounds to just miss out on a double-double.
  • BU won the battle at the boards, 44-42, and outscored UConn in the paint, 24-12.
  • After being named to the Maui All-Tournament team last week after averaging 28.7 ppg and 7.3 apg, UConn's Adams was limited to just seven points on 3-of-15 shooting with four assists.
  • The Huskies finished with a 5-3 advantage in made 3-pointers and 12-10 lead in made free throws for the two-point victory.
  • UConn improved to 43-12 all-time in the series dating back to 1930 and has now won the last five meetings since BU's victory in 1986.
  • The 51 points allowed were the fewest in the series since a 51-50 defeat in 1982.
  • Junior Eric Johnson scored his first bucket of the season after missing the first five games to injury, meaning all 16 Terriers on the roster have now registered at least one field goal.
  • The Terriers went 3-of-19 (.158) from behind the arc ... In all three losses this season, they were held below 30 percent in 3-point territory.
NEXT UP: NORTH CAROLINA STATE
  • The Terriers will play their second consecutive former NCAA champion on Saturday at NC State with the Fox Sports South/ESPN3 broadcast set for 4:30 p.m.
  • NC State leads the all-time series, 2-0, having won in 1989-90 and 1995-96 by double digits.
  • BU will be seeking its first win against the ACC since pulling out a thrilling 83-77 win at Maryland in 2013.
