Terriers Use All-Around Effort to Top New Hampshire, 73-69

BOSTON – In a matchup featuring two participants from the 2016 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, the Boston University men's basketball team scored the game's final five points over the last 73 seconds to edge New Hampshire, 73-69, on Sunday afternoon at Case Gym.

THE FINAL STRETCH

  • Down by as many as 11 (44-33), New Hampshire took its lone lead (69-68) in the second half at 1:31 on a pair of free throws from Tanner Leissner.
  • On the ensuing possession, junior Cedric Hankerson hit his third 3-pointer at 1:12 for the 71-69 lead.
  • UNH missed a 3-point attempt and then was called with a charge at 38.6 seconds. 
  • Following a BU timeout, senior Eric Fanning drove to the hoop for a contested running jumper that pushed the lead to four with 13 seconds left.
  • The Wildcats missed a second 3-point attempt, and senior Justin Alston grabbed the defensive rebound to seal the victory.
THE SETUP
  • The first half was a see-saw affair with five lead changes.
  • After Kijana Love drained a 3-pointer to give UNH an 18-16 lead at 9:34, Alston hit a layup on an assist from sophomore Kyle Foreman to ignite an 11-0 run capped by two free throws from junior Cheddi Mosely at 6:32.
  • Holding a 32-29 lead at 1:46, junior Eric Johnson converted on a four-point play by following up on his 3-pointer with a free throw to help the Terriers enter the locker room ahead, 38-31.
  • Alston, Foreman and Fanning all hit buckets coming out of halftime to give BU its largest lead, 44-33, at 18:19.
  • Following Fanning's layup and a called timeout, Daniel Dion drained a 3-pointer to help spark a 14-4 UNH run capped by Iba Camara's layup at 12:54.
  • The teams went back and forth with UNH eventually tying the game at 8:28 (57-57) on Jaleen Smith's trey.
  • Johnson gave BU the 66-61 advantage at 5:09 on his third 3-pointer, but Leissner scored UNH's final eight points, including six from the line, to give BU a one-point advantage (69-68) at 1:31.
GAME NOTES
  • BU became the first Patriot League squad to defeat the Wildcats after UNH previously defeated Holy Cross (56-53) and American (80-70).
  • The Terriers snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 5-1 this season at home.
  • With their second-consecutive four-point win over UNH following last year's 78-74 victory, the Terriers improved to 98-39 all-time against the Wildcats with the series dating back to 1908-09.
  • With the help of three 3-pointers, Johnson reached double figures the fourth time in his career (10 points) in 22 minutes of action after scoring just two points in a combined 46 minutes over the previous five games.
  • Havener tied his career high with three blocks while coming up two points and two rebounds shy of a double-double.
  • UNH recorded three double-doubles in a game for the second time this season after a 65-60 win at Winthrop.
NEXT UP: UMASS LOWELL
  • The Terriers will put their seven-game win streak against the America East on the line at UMass Lowell Wednesday (Dec. 21) with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.
  • BU won last year's meeting, 80-60, at Tsongas Arena.
