BALTIMORE, Md. - Highlighted by junior Eric Fanning's second-career double-double and a perfect performance at the charity stripe, the Boston University men's basketball team earned a 73-65 win at Loyola Maryland on Saturday afternoon.
With their sixth-straight victory, the Terriers improve to 16-11 and 9-5 in Patriot League play to assure themselves of a .500 or better conference record for the 16th straight season. BU entered the season ranked tied-for-11th in the nation with the streak. The Greyhounds (8-17, 7-7 PL) were limited to 32.4 percent shooting to suffer the sweep
Featuring only nine of 16 players dressed and missing three starters from last season, BU used its 12th different lineup today and still managed to maintain the team's overall scoring average. Fanning had 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds with three assists and two blocks. Senior John Papale and freshman Kyle Foreman also tallied 14 points, while sophomore Cheddi Mosely reached 10 points. Junior Dylan Haines came off the bench to post a career-high 10 points and five rebounds to become the 13th Terrier (NCAA high) to reach double figures this season.
Franz Rassman was one of four Greyhounds in double figures, as he tallied 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Andre Walker recorded 16 points, five assists and three steals, while Chancellor Barnard fell two rebounds shy of a double-double with 12 points. Eric Laster contributed 10 points, as Loyola shot 2-of-18 (.111) from behind the arc.
Foreman started the contest with a steal to set up Mosely's layup and give BU the lead for good. Leading 9-5 at 12:49, the Terriers went on a 11-2 run over the following two minutes capped by another Mosely layup. Haines hit one of his two 3-pointers during the stretch and fed a slashing Mosely for the 20-7 advantage.
Sophomore Nick Havener's slam dunk gave BU its largest lead of the game, 29-12, with 7:39 left in the half. Loyola managed to cut the deficit to 12 (36-24) entering the locker room with the help of 7-0 advantage in second chance points.
The Greyhounds carried the momentum into the second half and quickly cut the deficit to four (38-34) at 15:35, but Papale hit a 3-pointer in response to help silence the crowd. Having played two overtime contests in the last three meetings, the teams traded blows back and forth for the following 13 minutes with BU still maintaining the lead.
Laster earned a defensive stop and hit the jumper to pull within three (63-60) at 2:35, but again, Papale stepped up with two free throws. The Terriers then got a defensive stop, and Fanning drove to the hoop for the contested layup and seven-point advantage.
BU finished the contest 14-of-14 to help seal its third sweep of a PL opponent this season while shooting 26-of-58 (.448). The Greyhounds edged the Terriers in the rebounding battle, 43-41, as both teams finished with five blocks apiece.
With three of their last four regular season games taking place at home, the Terriers will next host Colgate Wednesday (Feb. 17) at 7 p.m.
