BOCA RATON, Fla. - Reaching extra innings for the first time this season, the Boston University softball team fell to Florida Atlantic, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon in the final contest of the FAU Invitational.

With the help of three runs in the final two innings, the Owls improved to 13-1, as the Terriers (3-6) suffered their fourth one-run loss of the early season.

Senior Lauren Hynes (2-2) went the distance for BU, allowing three earned runs off nine hits while tallying seven strikeouts against just one walk. FAU's Kylee Hanson (6-0) pitched three scoreless innings and limited the Terriers to two hits to help the Owls escape with the win.

Finishing with a 9-7 advantage in hits, FAU jumped out ahead in the third with the help of two singles, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI groundout. The Terriers came right back in the top of the fourth with three runs off four hits.

Sophomore Emma Wong and junior Brittany Younan led off with back-to-back singles and then scored on a bases-clearing double by freshman Alex Heinen. Sophomore Kaitlin Sahlinger added another double to extend the lead to 3-1.

A 2015 NCAA regional finalist, the Owls had an opportunity to cut into the lead in the fifth with two singles. A passed ball allowed both runners to reach scoring position with one out, but Hynes ended the threat with a strikeout and fly out. BU had their own scoring opportunity with two hits in the seventh but a double-play helped FAU keep the deficit at two runs.

Mounting a rally, FAU loaded the bases with two singles and a fielder's choice grounder. The Owls scored the first run on a ground out and then tied the game on a double. They tried to win the game during the double but Wong was able to get the ball from right field to junior Gabi Martinez at home in time to apply the tag.

Using tiebreaker rules, BU had a runner placed at second in the eighth but was unable to score with three straight outs. FAU swiped third during its first at-bat and then later scored on a suicide squeeze with one out to claim the victory.

The Terriers will next fly west to open the San Diego Classic against Grand Canyon on Friday (March 4) at 2:30 p.m. ET.
