BOSTON - Led by Alex Heinen's power hitting, the Boston University softball team earned its fifth-straight win, topping Providence, 10-2, in five innings on Wednesday afternoon in the home opener at the BU Softball Field. The Terriers (9-11) earn their 10th-straight home win against the Friars (10-11), a streak dating back to 1992.

Heinen finished the day with six RBIs thanks to a two-out, three-run double in the bottom of the third before putting one over the fence for another three runs in the bottom of the fourth, extending the BU lead to eight and putting the run rule into play. Her six RBIs is one shy of the school record.

Emma Wong also had a strong performance on the day, recording a two-run single and a walk and reached on a fielders choice in her three plate appearances. Her single started off BU's fourth-inning surge, during which the Terriers recorded four hits and seven runs.

Lauren Hynes was the pitcher of record, finishing the day with two strikeouts and just one walked batter. The Terrier defense was strong behind her, totaling 15 putouts including four by second baseman, Emily Morrow, and three by first baseman Alex Heinen. Brittany Younan, the shortstop, assisted on three putouts.

BU finished ahead in hits, 9-6, and neither team recorded an error on the afternoon.

Both teams got off to a slow start as BU retired three of the first four Friars and then managed a hit before ending the first inning scoreless. The second inning ended in the same manner and the pair headed into the third inning with a 0-0 tie thanks to excellent fielding on both sides.

The third inning began the scoring action as Providence tallied the first run of the game with two outs. Hynes struck the next batter out, however, to contain the Friar offense.

BU responded in the bottom of the third as Wong walked, and Moriah Connolly and Kaitlin Sahlinger singled to load the bases with just one out on the board. After the next batter struck out, Heinen worked the plate until she found her pitch and blasted it just fair on the left field line to send in all three runners on base and record a stand up double.

After allowing the Friars to score another run in the top of the inning, BU broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring seven runs to get ahead by eight and enforce the run rule. The PC pitcher, Christina Ramirez, struggled with her first two batters, hitting them both with her pitch to put them on base.

Younan then singled to center field to load the bases and Wong followed it up by sending in two runners off of a hard-hit ball toward the third baseman. The Terriers scored a pair more thanks to a fielders choice and a successful bunt to bring the score to 7-2 with one out.

With two runners on base, Heinen sent one over the right field wall to make it a 10-2 lead by the end of the fourth inning. The BU defense needed just four batters to record the three outs needed to end the game early.

BU Is back in action on Saturday when the Terriers head to College Park, Md. for the Maryland Invitational. BU plays Binghamton and Maryland on Saturday before finishing the weekend against Ball State and Massachusetts on Sunday.
