WEST POINT, N.Y. - Opening the Patriot League schedule, the Boston University softball team suffered a hard-fought doubleheader loss at Army West Point on Saturday afternoon. The Black Knights (17-11, 2-0 PL) defeated the Terriers (11-14, 0-2 PL), 3-1 and 5-4, to extend their win streak to six games.
Senior Lauren Hynes (8-7) allowed just three earned runs in a combined 10.2 innings of work but still collected a pair of losses, as the Black Knights scattered 14 BU hits through 14 innings and took advantage of a costly defensive miscue late in the second contest.
Junior Brittany Younan led the Terriers with a combined three hits in the doubleheader and tied freshman Alex Heinen with two RBIs apiece. Heinen blasted her second homer of the season for BU's lone run in the first game.
Heinen's homer tied the contest, 1-1, after Army jumped out ahead in the first on a triple and RBI single. The Black Knights added a two-out RBI single in the fourth and managed to add another in the fifth when the Terriers were too late in converting on the rundown at second.
Caroline Smith (6-5) limited BU to just five hits despite only having one strikeout to claim the win. Renee Poirier picked up her sixth save after a scoreless seventh.
The Black Knights started strong in the second game with two runs off a combined four hits and two walks against sophomore Sydni Overly and senior Melanie Russell. With the bases loaded, Hynes appeared in relief and earned two outs to limit the damage.
The BU bats came alive in the third against Kristen West (10-1) when sophomore Jilee Schanda led off with a double. Younan followed Hynes' single with an RBI single. Sophomore Emma Wong and Heinen both had a sacrifice fly to give the Terriers the 3-2 advantage. BU though would only have four more hits over the final four innings.
Army took the lead for good in the fourth when the Terriers misplayed a throw at first to keep the inning alive and allow two runs to score. The Black Knights added a two-out RBI single to extend the lead to 5-3.
BU stranded a runner in each of the final three innings but had an opportunity to tie the game in the seventh. Schanda singled to right, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored on Younan's two-out RBI single. Poirer halted the rally by getting an infield groundout for her seventh save.
The Terriers will end the weekend series at Army on Sunday with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
