The No. 20 Boston University men's lacrosse team will travel to Buffalo, New York, for the first time to face Canisius on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The game will be broadcast live in New York on Time Warner Cable and also streamed online at GoGriffs.com. This is the Terriers' first appearance on TV this season.
BU (4-1) is in the national poll for the second time in program history thanks to a 10-9, double-overtime victory over then-No. 16 Navy last weekend at Nickerson Field. The Terriers are off to their best start in their three-year history and currently have the best overall record among Patriot League squads.
This will be the third meeting between BU and Canisius, with the teams splitting the first two encounters. The Griffs defeated the Terriers, 9-3, in 2014 before BU earned a 13-9 victory last year. Both games were at Nickerson Field.
Sophomores Jack Wilson (2g, 2a) and Ryan Hilburn (1g, 3a) each notched four points last year, while junior Cal Dearth has tallied three goals and an assist all-time against Canisius. Junior Greg Wozniak scored a goal and had seven ground balls in last year’s victory.
Juniors Sam Tenney (3g) and Adam Schaal (2g, 1a) each have three career points while classmates Ryan Johnston and Craig Zebrowski each have one goal to their credit. Sophomore Greg Farris secured two assists last season. Junior Christian Carson-Banister has combined for 27 saves in the two games against the Griffs.
BU will have an advantage at the faceoff X thanks to the experienced Sam Talkow. The junior went 14-of-26 at the faceoff X with seven ground balls in last year’s victory and will not have to faceoff against the experienced Tim Edwards, who graduated in 2015.
Canisius will have to contend with a Terrier defense that leads the nation with 53 caused turnovers and is also first in the NCAA with 10.6 caused turnovers per game. BU forced nine of Navy’s 13 turnovers in Saturday’s victory and has not allowed more than 10 goals in each of its four victories.
Saturday will be the season opener for Canisius, which won just once at home last season and finished 3-12 overall.. The Griffs lost their top two point scorers from last season but return Jeff Edwards and Vince Gravino, who scored 13 and 15 goals, respectively. Edwards finished with 26 points thanks to a team-best 13 assists, while Gravino had 21 points.
Steven Coss went 35-of-99 at the faceoff X last season and gathered 20 ground balls. Both returning goalkeepers, Liam Ganzhorn and Jeff Wilson, have combined to play just 60:05.
The Terriers will return home on Saturday, March 12, when they host Colgate at Nickerson Field.
