BUFFALO, N.Y. - Freshman Brendan Homire scored the Terriers' final three goals of the game as the No. 20 Boston University men's lacrosse team erased a 7-4 deficit and secured a 10-8 victory over Canisius on Saturday afternoon at Demske Sports Complex.
BU (5-1) held a 4-1 lead early in the second quarter, but Canisius (0-1) rattled off six straight goals to try and put the game out of reach. Sparked by freshman Tristan Ruh's first collegiate goal at the end of the third quarter, the Terriers went on a 5-0 run and used a late Homire marker to seal the victory.
Homire's first collegiate hat trick was one of two three-goal performances for the Terriers. Sophomore Jack Wilson also had three goals, with all three markers assisted by junior Cal Dearth. Freshman Ryan Hilburn returned to the lineup and found the back of the net while junior Adam Schaal had two points thanks to a goal and an assist. Junior Sam Tenney and freshman James Burr also had one assist apiece.
Junior Sam Talkow was 8-of-12 at the faceoff X and won seven of the final eight draws he took. He also tied the game, 7-7, to set the stage for Homire's heroics. Senior Elliott Burr was also solid at the X, going 5-of-8 with three ground balls.
Christian Carson-Banister had another strong game, as the junior goalkeeper made 10 saves. Six of those stops came in the second half.
Hilburn opened the scoring with one of the Terriers' three man-up markers just 2:14 into the proceedings. Schaal and Wilson also scored to give BU a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes.
Wilson quickly scored to make it 4-1 with 11:57 left in the second quarter. Canisius cut the lead to 4-3 at halftime before scoring four straight goals to take a 7-4 lead with 1:21 remaining in the third quarter. Ruh's goal with 10 seconds to play in the quarter, however, gave BU momentum and cut the Canisius lead to 7-5.
Two goals in the first 28 seconds of the fourth quarter tied the game, with the first one going to Wilson. Talkow then won the ensuing faceoff and fired home his fifth goal of the season.
Homire made it 8-7 with 10:58 to play, and then extended the lead to 9-7 less than a minute later. A Lewis Vaccaro goal with 3:42 to play made it 9-8, but Homire responded again with 2:17 left to seal the result.
The Terriers will return to Patriot League play next Saturday when they host Colgate at Nickerson Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
