TURNING POINT
- Leading 61-57, BU missed a 3-pointer but freshman Max Mahoney managed to grab the rebound before it went out of bounds and found Hankerson at the top of the key for a 3-pointer with 5:16 remaining.
- The Eagles pulled within five (64-59) at 3:25 on Delante Jones' layup, but junior Cedric Hankerson responded with his fifth 3-pointer and freshman Tyler Scanlon added another at 1:21 to help create enough distance for a 70-61 lead.
THE SETUP
- Senior Eric Fanning opened with a 3-pointer to ignite a 20-4 run capped by junior Will Goff's 3-pointer at 13:51.
- The Terriers though could not maintain the large lead, as they went six minutes without a bucket and American went on a 12-0 run.
- BU responded with a 9-0 spurt and went into the locker room leading, 31-24, with a 5-2 edge in 3-poiinters and 4-0 advantage in free throws.
- Scanlon followed Hankerson's four-point play with a 3-pointer to give the Terriers their largest lead of the second half (40-26) at 19:18.
- The Eagles though chipped away again at the lead and used a 3-pointer at 15:14 from Sa'eed Nelson to pull within six (45-39) four minutes later.
- Leading 47-43, Hankerson sparked a 10-3 spurt with a 3-pointer and three free throws that finished with Fanning's jumper at 9:49.
- AU scored seven straight in response over the following two minutes to cut the deficit to four but would never get any closer.
GAME NOTES
- With his 3-pointer at 19:33 in the first half, Fanning became the 35th to score 1,000 points in a Terrier uniform ... He currently ranks 33rd at BU with 1,015 points and has now scored 1,156 total after tallying 141 his freshman year at Wagner.
- By hitting at least five 3-pointers for the fifth time this season, Hankerson now just needs seven more treys to crack the top 10 in the BU record book.
- BU improved to 8-1 at home this season and has held seven of the nine opponents below 70 points.
- The Eagles won the battle at the boards, 37-34, and outscored the Terriers in second-chance points, 18-7.
- BU improved to 8-3 in the all-time series and avenged last year's home PL quarterfinal loss to the Eagles (69-64).
- Sixth-year head coach Joe Jones is just one win away from becoming the third-ever to record 100 wins at BU ... Mike Jarvis (1985-90) is second with the Terriers at 101 wins, while Dennis Wolff (1994-2009) is well ahead at 247 wins ... Coincidentally, Wolff's son, Matt, is in his seventh year as an assistant at American after claiming 2009 America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades with the Terriers.
NEXT UP: LOYOLA MARYLAND
- The Terriers will make their first appearance of the season on the CBS Sports Network when they visit Loyola Maryland on Monday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m.
- Last year, BU claimed a sweep over the Greyhounds with an 87-84 overtime win at home and a 73-65 road victory.
- Fanning had a career-high 37 points in the first win and then followed up with a 14-point, 15-rebound performance.
