BOSTON – Led by a stout defensive effort, the Boston University women's basketball team outlasted Boston College, 61-57, Sunday afternoon at The Roof.
The Terriers held the Eagles to just 33.8 percent (22-65) shooting from the floor and a 14.3 clip (3-21) from beyond-the-arc.
Katie Nelson led the offensive charge for BU, pouring in a game-high 19 points, while
Corrine Williams and
Naiyah Thompson reached double-digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Thompson also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to post her first career double-double.
How it Happened
- After a slow start, two drives from Payton Hauck put the Terriers up, 6-4, midway through the first.
- Williams drilled a 3-pointer from the corner to put BU up by five with two minutes left in the quarter, though the Eagles responded with a 6-2 run to hold the scoreboard at 13-12.
- Boston College stayed hot as it opened the second stanza with a 6-1 run to take a six-point lead before Tenisha Pressley and Nelson hit back-to-back triples to put BU back within one possession at 23-21 with five minutes left before the break.
- Nelson continued to stay hot from deep, drilling a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute of the half to cut the Eagle's lead to 29-28 heading into the locker room.
- Williams sparked the Terriers to open the third, hustling for an offensive rebound and converted on a putback and-1 to put BU ahead, 34-32 three minutes in. From there, BU closed the third quarter on 7-2 run to hold the scoreboard in its favor, 41-36.
- The Terriers extended their run to 18-4 to start the fourth, but Boston College made a comeback attempt at the end, netting 17 points over the final four minutes, though BU held on for the win.
