Terriers Edge New Hampshire in Frantic Finish, 70-69

DURHAM, N.H. – After senior Nick Havener and New Hampshire exchanged putbacks, freshman Javante McCoy hit his second free throw attempt with 2.6 seconds remaining to give the Boston University men's basketball team a thrilling 70-69 road win at Lundholm Gym on Wednesday night.

Sophomore Max Mahoney scored a career-high 15 points, while senior Cedric Hankerson posted 17 points, as the Terriers (3-3) overcame an 8-of-21 (.381) free-throw performance to reach .500 for the first time this season.

THE FINAL STRETCH
  • After senior Will Goff hit one of his two 3-pointers to give BU a 65-58 lead at 4:39, Josh Hopkins responded with one of his own to ignite a 9-2 spurt capped by Iba Camara's short jumper with 2:27 remaining to tie the game for the sixth time.
  • BU missed its next three field goal attempts and two free throw attempts (1:18), but still faced a 67-67 deadlock with the help of two steals.
  • Following a defensive rebound on Camara's contested layup attempt, Havener missed an open 3-pointer but immediately rushed to the hoop for the offensive rebound and putback with 24 seconds remaining.
  • Tanner Leissner also missed his initial shot and scored on his own rebound at 11 seconds, but he fouled the driving McCoy with 2.6 seconds left.
  • UNH called a timeout following McCoy's made free throw to set up a play, but Havener managed to deflect the long in-bounds pass at mid-court to seal the one-point victory.
THE SETUP
  • Camara hit back-to-back layups to give UNH its largest lead of the game, 6-2, at 17:14, and Leissner drained a 3-pointer one minute later to maintain the four-point advantage (11-7).
  • Trailing 21-20 with 9:54 remaining in the half, the Terriers went on a 10-2 run over the next six minutes with both freshman Walter Whyte and junior Kamali Chambers hitting a 3-pointer.
  • David Watkins pulled UNH within four, 30-26, on his own trey at 2:40, but the Terriers scored the final eight points with sophomore Tyler Scanlon burying a 3-pointer on BU's final possession for the 38-26 halftime lead.
  • The Wildcats did not attempt a single free throw in the first half but took six in the first four minutes of the second to stay within striking distance of the Terriers.
  • Down 44-34 with 15:45 left, UNH scored seven straight points with the help of two free throws, a 3-pointer and layup to the cut the deficit to three at 14:29.
  • Leissner later had a slam dunk at 9:50 to pull the Wildcats within two, 51-49, and help set up the frantic finish. 
GAME NOTES
  • The Terriers are now 2-1 on the road this season after posting a 0-6 road record against non-conference opponents last year.
  • With its third-straight victory over UNH, BU improved to 99-38 all-time against the Wildcats in a series dating back to 1908-09 and is now 2-1 this season against the America East with one more road game remaining at UMass Lowell ... The Terriers won last Wednesday at Maine after losing to Albany at home.
  • Hankerson went 7-of-16 from the field with seven two-point field goals ... Currently No. 5 all-time in career 3-pointers, he entered the game with just four two-point buckets.
  • Mahoney hit a career-high seven field goals on 11 attempts while adding a free throw to top his previous high of 12 points ... He added a team-high six rebounds.
  • Junior Kamali Chambers hit a personal-best three field goals against a Division I opponent, including his first 3-pointer of the season, while tying a career high with two steals in just eight minutes of action.
  • Iba Camara led UNH with a double-double (12 pts., 12 rebs.), while Tanner Leissner and Josh Hopkins combined for 39 points and 11 rebounds.
  • BU won the game despite shooting 1-of-9 from behind the arc and 3-of-14 at the charity stripe in the second half ... The Terriers shot 5-of-10 and 5-of-7, respectively, during the first 20 minutes of action.
  • The Terriers are now 6-4 all-time under head coach Joe Jones in one-point decisions.
NEXT UP: #10 MIAMI (FLA.)
  • BU will remain on the road and visit the No. 10/13 Miami Hurricanes on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. in what will be a homecoming game for Hankerson.
  • The Terriers will visit Miami for the second time in program history following an 81-60 loss in 1965.
  • BU visited two ACC schools last season with a 77-73 loss at NC State and 99-77 defeat at Syracuse.
