BOSTON – Despite senior
Cedric Hankerson recording a season and game-high 22 points, the Boston University men's basketball team fell to Elon, 77-69, on Sunday afternoon at Case Gym.
Winning the first-ever meeting between the two programs, the Phoenix improve to 7-4, while the Terriers now sit at 4-6.
TURNING POINT
- After sophomore Tyler Scanlon hit a sideline jumper to tie the game, 63-63, Brian Dawkins flushed one of Elon's 15 3-pointers to spark a 10-0 run capped by Jack Anton's layup at 1:21.
- BU missed five field goal attempts and committed a pair of turnovers before freshman Javante McCoy stopped the four-minute scoring drought at 1:12 with a contested layup.
- Elon sealed the win by hitting all four free throw attempts in the final 22 seconds.
THE SETUP
- The first-half was a high-scoring affair with both teams combining for 82 points with the help of 16 3-pointers.
- Facing an early 6-3 deficit, Hankerson scored from downtown, as BU went on a 17-5 run finished by freshman Walter Whyte's 3-pointer at 13:11.
- Goff went a perfect 3-of-3 in the first half from behind the arc and added one on an assist at 9:23 to give BU its largest lead of the game (28-16).
- Trailing, 34-23, after senior Nick Havener's layup at 6:12, the Phoenix scored 19 of the next 25 points.
- Steven Santa Ana drained four treys during the rally to give Elon a 42-40 halftime lead.
- Elon scored the first four points in the second half and later led, 55-50, at 10:59 on another 3-pointer.
- Hankerson responded with a 3-pointer, steal and slam dunk to tie the game, 55-55, at 9:28, and hit his third and final 3-pointer one minute later to keep the game tied.
GAME NOTES
- Presented with a 1,000-point commemorative ball before tip-off, Hankerson went 7-of-19, including 3-of-11 in 3-point territory, for a game-high 22 points ... He now ranks 25th all-time at BU with 1,113 career points.
- Whyte posted 10 points with six rebounds to reach double figures in back-to-back games for the first time.
- Goff drained a career-tying four 3-pointers to record 12 points, while Havener had a game-high eight rebounds.
- BU started the contest 11-of-16 (.688) but went 15-of-46 (.326) the rest of the way.
- The Phoenix entered the game averaging 10.2 made 3-pointers while allowing 10.4 ... Elon went 15-of-33 (.455), while the Terriers finished 11-of-27 (.407).
- Santa Ana led Elon with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists ... He was one of four in double figures, as All-CAA First Team preseason honoree Tyler Seibring tallied 15 points and eight rebounds.
- Elon collected its first true road win of the season, as the Terriers fell to 1-3 at home.
NEXT UP: HARVARD
- The Terriers will return to the road for the fifth time in six games by making the short trek to Harvard on Thursday (Dec. 21) at 7 p.m.
- BU and Harvard are resuming the series dating back to 1904-05 after the teams took a break last season.
- Harvard leads the all-time series, 39-27, after escaping with a 75-69 win in Case Gym in 2015.
