The Boston University men's lacrosse team will continue its 2017 season on Saturday at UMass Lowell. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
BU began the year 1-0 for the third straight season with a thrilling 8-7 win in double overtime at Providence on Feb. 4. The Terriers trailed the Friars, 7-3, late in the third quarter but scored the final five goals of the game, including sophomore Brendan Homire's winner. Junior Hayden Ruiz recorded a career-high four points (2g, 2a), all of which came on the final four goals of the game. Ruiz himself tied the game, 7-7, with 1:33 remaining in regulation, before assisting on Homire's man-up marker just nine seconds into the second overtime period.
Senior goalkeeper Christian Carson-Banister made 16 saves on Saturday and was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week for his efforts. One of his stops came during the first overtime period on a close-range shot to keep the game tied. He shut out the Friars over the final 15 minutes, turning aside the final six shots he faced on Saturday to help spark the Terrier comeback. Nobody in the nation made more saves than Carson-Banister last week and he ranks second in the nation in save percentage (.696) and third in the NCAA in goals-against average (6.55).
Junior Jack Wilson takes a 27-game point streak into Saturday's showdown. He has scored 44 goals and 26 assists for 70 points during that 27-game streak, which began at Providence on Feb. 25, 2015. Wilson had a goal and an assist in the win at Providence. He has been held without a point just once in his 30-game collegiate career.
Saturday will be the second time that BU and UMass Lowell have faced one another. The teams met for the first time last season on a frigid February afternoon, with BU scoring the final seven goals of the game to earn an 8-5 victory on Feb. 12. The Terriers trailed, 5-1, just 1:10 into the third quarter before going on their run. James Burr scored a career-high four goals and Wilson tallied two goals and two assists for a four-point day. Greg Farris notched the game-winner with 8:46 to play.
UMass Lowell is entering its third season as a varsity program. The River Hawks improved to 4-12 last season after finishing their first campaign at 1-13. UMass Lowell returns its leading point (38) and assist (18) man Sean Tyrrell. Tyrrell also tied for the team lead in goals (20) with Matt Balter.
Will Puduski led the River Hawks in ground balls (64) and caused turnovers (25) last year and won 38.9 percent of his faceoffs. Grant Lardieri will be back in the cage after posting a .470 save percentage and 11.24 goals-against average last year.
A week from Saturday, the Terriers will continue their season-opening four-game road trip at Hartford on Feb. 18. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
