BOCA RATON, Fla. – Coming off a thrilling 3-1 win over No. 23 Florida Atlantic, the Boston University softball team recorded a split Saturday evening on day two of the FAU Kick-Off Classic with a 1-0 win against North Florida and 5-1 loss to Bethune-Cookman.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Making her debut in the scarlet & white, freshman Kali Magane scattered three hits and allowed just one walk through seven shutout innings of work with the help of four strikeouts.
  • Sophomore Emily Morrow recorded her first-career homer in the bottom of the fourth toward right field in what proved to be the game's lone run.
  • The Ospreys only once had a runner reach second back in the first thanks to senior catcher Gabi Martinez throwing out Taylor Aguayo on an attempted stolen base in the fourth and Magane inducing a fielder's choice groundout in the sixth.
  • Magane ended the game by getting a pair of groundouts to sophomore Alexa Ponce at third while also earning a strikeout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when senior Moriah Connolly scored on sophomore Alexa Ponce's two-out RBI single.
  • BU had several opportunities to add more runs but left 13 players on base, including three apiece in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively.
  • Senior Makinna Akers appeared in relief in the second and kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard until they took advantage of two BU fielding errors with a pair of singles and pulled ahead, 2-1, during the fourth inning.
  • Mariah Estrada allowed three straight singles to open the sixth but then got three straight infield grounders with the first two leading to a force out at home to maintain the one-run lead.
  • With two outs in the sixth and a runner in scoring position, BCU put the game away with an RBI single and two-run blast against Akers.
FAU KICK-OFF CLASSIC DAY TWO GAME NOTES
  • Magane became the first BU pitcher to record a shutout in her debut since Akers allowed four hits in six scoreless innings of work for a 4-0 win against Gardner Webb on Feb. 22, 2014.
  • The Terriers defeated UNF for the first time since losing, 3-1, in eight innings in 2012.
  • BU and BCU met for the first time in program history.
NEXT UP: NC State
  • The Terriers will conclude the FAU tourney on Sunday (Feb. 12) against NC State and a familiar face in Shawn Rychick at 9 a.m.
  • Rychick was the head coach at BU from 2005-12 and led the Terriers to three NCAA appearances in 2009, 2010 and 2012.
