The Boston University men's lacrosse team will begin Patriot League play on Saturday when the Terriers hit the road to face No. 17/18 Navy at 12 p.m.
BU is off to a 3-0 start for the second straight season after a convincing 12-5 win at Hartford last Saturday. If the Terriers can defeat Navy (1-2) on Saturday, they will be 4-0 for the first time in program history. February has been kind to BU, as the Terriers are 10-3 over the last three years during the opening month of the season.
The Terriers bested the Mids, 10-9, in a thrilling double-overtime contest last season at Nickerson Field. James Burr scored the game-winner while Sam Talkow tied the game with less than a minute to play in regulation. Navy has won the other two meetings. In each of the last three years, including 2017, at least one of the two teams has been ranked heading into the matchup.
Senior goalkeeper Christian Carson-Banister, who made 15 saves in last year's victory over Navy, is off to a terrific start to 2017. He ranks fourth in the NCAA and first in the Patriot League with a save percentage of .700 and his goals-against average of 6.38 is first in the PL and eighth in the NCAA. Carson-Banister held Hartford to just five goals last week and has yet to allow more than seven goals in any game this season.
Junior Jack Wilson takes a 29-game point streak into Saturday's showdown. He has scored 47 goals and 26 assists for 73 points during that 27-game streak, which began at Providence on Feb. 25, 2015. Wilson has been held without a point just once in his 32-game collegiate career.
Senior Cal Dearth has been tough to stop over the last two games. He scored a career-high five goals at Hartford and has tallied 11 points (6g, 5a) over the last two tilts. He was not the only Terrier to have a career day at Hartford, as freshman John MacLean tallied a career-high four points (2g, 2a) while senior Chad Bell recorded a career-best three points (1g, 2a).
Navy is 1-2 this season, earning its first victory of the year last Saturday, 11-5, over Delaware. The two losses have been to a pair of top-10 teams, however, as the Mids lost to then-No. 8 Johns Hopkins (15-8) on the road before falling at home to then-No. 2 Maryland, 15-12.
Ryan Wade leads Navy in assists (8) and points (13) and is one of three Mids along with Drew Smiley and Greyson Torain to have scored a team-best five goals. Matt Rees has collected 16 ground balls and also caused 10 turnovers while Brady Dove has won 65.6 percent of the faceoffs he has taken. Reigning PL Goalkeeper of the Week Ryan Kern has played every minute for Navy and owns an 11.67 goals-against average along with a .500 save percentage.
It will be a quick turnaround for BU following Saturday's showdown at Navy, as the Terriers host their home opener on Tuesday, Feb. 28, against Bryant. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
