Terriers Shut Down Lafayette in Second Half for 75-58 Win

BOSTON – Boosted by 36 bench points and a strong defensive effort that allowed just five field goals in the second half, the Boston University men's basketball team rolled to a 75-58 win over Lafayette Sunday afternoon at Case Gym on the CBS Sports Network. With their 10th home win of the season, the Terriers (13-11, 8-4 PL) move back into a tie-for-second with Navy in the Patriot League standings.

TURNING POINT
  • Down one at the half, senior Eric Fanning hit five straight free throws to key a 13-0 run capped by freshman Max Mahoney's jumper at 12:19 that gave BU the lead for good.
  • The Leopards pulled within six (53-47) at 8:25, but BU responded with a 17-3 over the following four minutes to put the game away.
  • The Terriers outscored Lafayette in the second half, 35-17, by tallying 20 of the points off 12 turnovers.
GAME NOTES
  • With today's win, sixth-year head coach Joe Jones moved past Mike Jarvis ('85-'90) into sole possession of second place all-time at BU with 102 career wins ... Dennis Wolff ('94-'09) remains well ahead at 247.
  • Junior Eric Johnson came off the bench to hit a career-tying four 3-pointers and tie his personal best with 12 points, last accomplished against Army West Point in 2016.
  • Junior Will Goff recorded a career-high six rebounds and also hit a career-tying four 3-pointers ... He was two points shy of his personal best scored against Western New England back in November.
  • Mahoney was also impressive off the bench, going 6-of-7 in the paint, for a season-high 12 points.
  • Senior Eric Fanning was one rebound shy of his fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
  • Lafayette was held to 5-of-27 (.185) in the second half and added seven free throws for 17 points, the fewest allowed this season by the Terriers in a half.
  • The Leopards' Nick Lindner scored all 13 of his team-high points in the first half.
  • The Terriers hosted a game on Super Bowl Sunday for the first time since Feb. 1, 2004 ... That year, they beat Albany, 67-55, and the New England Patriots edged the Carolina Panthers, 32-29, in Houston.
