BOSTON – After a two-week break, the Boston University softball will open its spring break trip to California against five opponents at the San Diego Classic. The Terriers will first face San Jose State on Friday (March 3) at 5 p.m. ET and then conclude the tournament Sunday at 12 p.m. ET against defending MAC champion Miami Ohio.

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • BU is riding a three-game win streak after ending the Madeira Beach Invitational with victories over UAB (5-3), Quinnipiac (8-1) and Southern Illinois (5-4).
  • Senior Gabi Martinez (.400 avg.) was named the Patriot League Player of the Week after batting .462 in the five contests with three homers and eight RBIs.
  • Freshman Kali Magane (3-2, 2.21 ERA) claimed PL Rookie of the Week accolades after appearing in four contests, including a complete-game effort against Oakland (1-0 L), and collecting two wins.
  • The Terriers are batting .283 with four players over .300 ... Sophomore Alex Heinen (.323) is tied with Martinez at eight RBIs.
  • Senior Moriah Connolly (.357) is a perfect 7-of-7 in stolen base attempts and has 10 hits alongside Heinen and Martinez ... Junior Kaitlin Sahlinger (.375) is just behind with nine hits.
  • Senior Makinna Akers (2-1, 2.47 ERA) owns team-high 15 strikeouts in 17 innings of work, while junior Sydni Overly (0-1, 4.61 ERA) has 14 strikeouts in 13.2 innings ... They and Magane are holding opponents to a combined .260 batting average.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

San Jose State (Friday, 5 p.m. ET at SDSU)
  • SJSU is currently 8-7 after going 28-24 last season ... The Spartans went 3-2 last weekend at the GCU Invitational with win over Rhode Island and two victories against Portland State ... They also own strong wins over Virginia and UC Riverside.
  • The Spartans are batting .265 with just five stolen bases and are holding opponents to .297.
  • Cassidy Clark is batting a team-high .345 with a homer and six RBIs, while Casey Watt (.316 avg) owns three doubles, two triples and team-high seven RBIs.
  • Katelyn Linford (5-2, 1 SV, 2.73 ERA) owns 47 strikeouts in 41.0 innings, while Colette Riggs (1-2, 2 SV, 2.72 ERA) owns 14 strikeouts in 18 innings.
  • BU last met and defeated the Spartans at SJSU in 2009, 4-1.
San Diego State (Friday, 10 p.m. ET at SDSU)
  • The Aztecs are currently 8-5 after going 30-22 last season ... They currently own impressive wins over No. 17 Utah (3-2) and Oklahoma State (17-5) ... Four of their five losses have come against ranked opponents, including 6-4 defeat to No. 1 Florida.
  • SDSU is batting a stellar .363 with 32 extra base hits in 13 games while holding opponents to .328 average.
  • Jenavee Peres is batting .422 with two homers and 16 RBIs, while Molly Sturdivant is 16-of-30 (.533) with five doubles, two homers and 10 RBIs.
  • Marissa Moreno (4-1, 2.66 ERA), Julie McDonald (1-1, 3.32 ERA) and Erica Romero (2-1, 3.36 ERA) have combined for 12 of the 13 starts.
  • SDSU edged BU, 2-0, at home last season.
BYU (Saturday, 4 p.m. ET at San Diego)
  • BYU is currently 7-5 after going 36-21 and 1-2 in the NCAA tournament ... The Cougars own impressive wins over then-No. 13 Washington (4-2), Nebraska (12-1) and then-No. 11 Georgia (4-0).
  • The Cougars are batting .295 with 27 extra base hits in 12 games and are holding opponents to .262.
  • Lexi Tarrow is batting a team-high .462 with seven RBIs, while Rylee Jensen (.371) owns team-high seven doubles ... Ashley THompson (.314) leads BYU with three homers and nine RBIs.
  • McKenna Bull (6-1, 3.05 ERA) has pitched four complete games with two shutouts and owns 35 strikeouts in 41.1 innings ... Kerisa Viramontes (1-1, 4.00 ERA) is holding batters to .207 so far.
  • BYU and BU will meet for the first time ever.
San Diego (Saturday, 6:30 p.m. ET at San Diego)
  • San Diego is 3-5 so far after going 22-29 last season ... The Toreros have a win over Stanford (2-0) and Seattle (8-1).
  • USD is batting .279 while holding opponents to .359.
  • Taylor Spence leads the Toreros at .423 with two doubles, while Hanna Gilliland (.375) owns team-high seven RBIs ... Kailey Hill (.286) has two of the team's four homers.
  • Megan Sabbatini (3-4, 5.64 ERA) has started seven of the eight games so far and owns 28 strikeouts in 36 innings ... Lauren Berriatua (0-1, 7.88 ERA) has the other start with a save.
  • USD and BU will meet for the first time ever after last year's contest was canceled by weather.
Miami Ohio (Sunday, 12 p.m. ET at SDSU)
  • The Redhawks are 5-8 after posting a 35-23 record and winning the MAC title last season with a 1-2 performance in the NCAA Regionals.
  • Miami is batting .252 while holding opponents to .328.
  • Michaela Schlattman leads the Redhawks at .368 avg. with three homers and eight homers ... Johniann Wahl (.273) owns a team-high 10 RBIs.
  • Jaime Scher (1-1, 3.50 ERA), Shannon Hohman (1-3, 4.64 ERA) and Kelsey Fredericks (2-4, 5.90 ERA) have combined for 38 strikeouts in 76 innings.
