SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Despite holding a three-run lead thorough five innings, the Boston University softball team fell to Miami (Ohio), 9-5, in the final contest of the San Diego Classic on Sunday morning.
After totaling just two hits through five complete, the defending MAC champion Redhawks plated nine runs, including seven unearned, on seven hits and three errors during the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach.

TURNING POINT
- Facing a 3-0 deficit, Miami scored eight of its nine runs in the sixth, taking advantage of three errors and seven hits.
- The Redhawks broke the shutout before taking their first lead after three straight unearned runs with two outs and capped the inning with a three-run home run.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Gabi Martinez started a two-out rally in the top of the first with a double to left, and sophomore Alexa Ponce followed by stroking an RBI single to drive in Martinez.
- After a scoreless second, senior Moriah Connolly led off the third owith a walk and swiped second. Martinez walked to put two aboard before Ponce once again delivered, driving in Connolly on a single up the middle.
- Miami got a runner in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of fifth, but junior Kaitlin Sahlinger was able to gun the potential run out at the plate to end the threat.
- The Terriers furthered their command in the fifth, as Sahlinger started the frame off with a single down the left field line and advanced into scoring position on a groundout. Junior Jilee Schanda delivered with a two-out RBI to give the Terriers the upper hand at 3-0.
- Following Miami's nine-run sixth, Alex Heinen breathed life into the Terriers with a two-run homer to start the seventh, but the deficit was too much to overcome, as the Terriers dropped its second decision to the Redhawks in the all-time series.
GAME NOTES
- BU's leadoff batter reached base in six of seven innings.
- Martinez went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while Ponce also tallied a trio of hits.
- Freshman Kali Magane allowed just two hits through five innings before Miami mounted the comeback.
NEXT UP
- The Terriers will head to Los Angeles for a doubleheader at Loyola Marymount on Tuesday (March 7) before closing out its California swing at the Long Beach State Tournament on March 9-12.
- BU will compete in six games against Eastern Michigan, Long Beach State, San Diego State, Cal State Fullerton (2x) and UCLA at the tournament.
