Terriers Complete Weekend Sweep with 11-1 Run-Rule Victory over Army

BOSTON – With the help of a seven-run second inning, the Boston University softball team completed the weekend sweep over Army West Point in run-rule fashion, 11-1, on Sunday afternoon at home.

Freshmen Kali Magane and Lizzie Annerino limited the Black Knights to five hits, while the middle of the lineup featuring senior Gabi Martinez, sophomore Alex Heinen and sophomore Alexa Ponce went a combined 7-of-9 with five doubles and six RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • For the third-straight game, the Terriers jumped out with two runs in the first ... Senior Moriah Connolly reached first on an error, stole second and scored on senior Gabi Martinez's double.
  • Sophomore Alexa Ponce followed with a two-out RBI double for what proved to be the game-winning run.
  • After the Black Knights cut the deficit in half with a sacrifice fly in the top of the second, the Terriers put the game away with seven runs off six hits, including a bases-clearing double from sophomore Alex Heinen and two-RBI single from junior Kaitlin Sahlinger.
  • Martinez and Heinen opened the third with back-to-back doubles, and junior Emma Wong plated a run with an infield grounder.
  • Freshman Lizzie Annerino replaced classmate Kali Magane in the fifth and recorded one of the team's three strikeouts to help the seal the run-rule victory.
GAME NOTES
  • Outscoring Army by a combined score of 23-1, the Terriers allowed just one run in a three-game weekend series for the first time since beating Hartford in 2012 by a combined score of 14-1 ... That year, they clamed three wins with the following scores: 1-0, 11-1 (5) and 2-0.
  • The Black Knights were swept in a three-game Patriot League weekend series for the first time since falling to Bucknell three times in 2015.
  • The Terriers' five doubles were two short of the school record but were a season high along with the 11 runs scored Sunday.
  • BU claimed its second run-rule victory of the season after claiming an 8-0 win against Holy Cross last weekend.
  • Sophomore Sam Sydenham collected her first hit of the season pinch-hitting in the fourth for the Terriers.
NEXT UP
  • The Terriers will remain home and host UMass Lowell on Tuesday ( with first pitch slated for 4 p.m.
  • The game is a late add to the schedule, as both teams were looking to replace previously weather-related canceled contests.
  • BU won last year's meeting at UML, 5-1, in eight innings and edged the River Hawks, 2-1, two years ago at home.
