Magane Named Turnpike Trophy MVP as BU Completes Sweep over Holy Cross, 8-0

April 9, 2017

BOSTON – Led by another strong pitching performance from freshman Kali Magane, the Boston University softball team completed the three-game weekend sweep over Holy Cross with an 8-0 run-rule victory Sunday afternoon. Junior Kaitlin Sahlinger opened the contest with a two-RBI single, and senior Emma Wong ended the game early with a bases-clearing triple.

The shutout marked the second of the season for Magane, who was named the Turnpike Trophy MVP after totaling two wins against the Crusaders with the help of 12 strikeouts and just one run allowed in 12 innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • With one out in the top of the first, Holy Cross' Taylor Wahler hit a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but freshman Kali Magane ended the threat by getting an infield grounder.
  • In the bottom half, senior Moriah Connolly and junior Jilee Schanda hit back-to-back singles before senior Gabi Martinez loaded the bases.
  • Alexandra Held almost got out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts, but junior Kaitlin Sahlinger delivered a two-RBI single up the middle to put BU ahead for good.
  • The Crusaders had one more great opportunity to avoid a shutout in the fourth with a one-out single and double, but Magane kept them off the scoreboard by inducing an infield line out and strike out.
  • BU added three more runs in the fourth off two hits and a defensive error with senior Rachel Levine delivering a successful RBI-sacrifice bunt and Connolly adding an RBI grounder.
  • After sophomore Madi Killebrew and Sahlinger hit back-to-back singles, Held seemingly ended the threat with a swinging strikeout but her pitch reached the backstop to load the bases.
  • Wong ended the game in the fifth with her second triple of the season.
