The No. 20 Boston University men's lacrosse team will close out the 2017 regular season on Sunday when the Terriers face No. 6 Duke in the "Battle at Bethpage" hosted in Bethpage, New York. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
Up to 6,000 fans are expected at Bethpage High School for the fifth annual "Battle at Bethpage," which also serves as the fourth-ever meeting between BU and Duke. The two schools have closed out the regular season each of the last three years, with the Blue Devils emerging victorious all three times. A BU win will be its first over a top-10 team.
Several Terriers will get to finish the season close to their hometowns. Seniors Brian Badgett (Garden City) and Allen Winkoff (Cold Spring Harbor); sophomores Michael Laviano (Upper Brookville), Brendan Homire (Huntington) and Quintin Germain (Huntington), and freshman Conor Muldoon (Garden City) all grew up less than 20 miles from Bethpage.
With the Terriers' chances for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament slim at best, Sunday's tilt is likely the final game for the Terriers' 17 seniors. The foundation for the program, this group led BU to the most wins and fewest losses in program history while securing the team's first-ever postseason berth and a trip to the Patriot League semifinals.
One of those seniors, goalkeeper Christian Carson-Banister, can add to his All-America resume on Sunday. He enters the final week of the regular season third in the NCAA in save percentage (.594) and ninth in the country in goals-against average (8.09). Two other seniors in legitimate consideration for an All-America nod are Cal Dearth, the team's leader in goals (36), assists (18) and points (54), and Calisto, one of the top close defenders in the country who leads the Terriers with 25 caused turnovers. Dearth can finish the year with a goal in all 17 games if he finds the back of the net on Sunday.
Duke suffered a 7-6 setback to No. 4 Notre Dame last Friday in the ACC semifinals. A win over BU on Sunday will all but ensure the Blue Devils a spot in the NCAA Tournament and perhaps even a home game depending on other results this weekend.
Justin Guterding leads the Blue Devils with 75 points thanks to 41 goals and a team-best 34 assists. Jack Bruckner is the team's top goal scorer with 43 markers. Kyle Rowe has won 56.9 percent of his faceoffs this season (170-of-299) and has won 92 ground balls. Danny Fowler has started all 15 games at goalkeeper, posting an 8.47 goals-against average and a .529 save percentage.
