DAVOS, Switzerland - Senior captain
Brandon Hickey of the Boston University men's ice hockey team helped Team Canada capture the 2017 Spengler Cup title with a 3-0 victory over Switzerland on Sunday.
Hickey, one of only four NCAA players on the team, tallied two assists and led the squad in ice time for three of its four contests en route to a perfect 4-0 record and Canada's record-tying 15th championship in the oldest invitational ice hockey tournament in the world.
Following a 5-3 win over Mountfield HK in the opener on Dec. 26, Team Canada advanced to the semifinals with a 4-2 victory over tournament host HC Davos on Dec. 28. A rematch with Mountfield on Dec. 30 in the semifinals resulted in a 5-2 Canada win, setting up the title tilt with Switzerland. Hickey picked up an assist against Davos and in the semifinal triumph versus Mountfield before finishing the tournament with a plus-3 rating.
A veteran of 126 games with the Terriers, Hickey tallied five points on three goals and two assists during the first half of the season and now has 45 points (18g, 27a) during his collegiate career. The Leduc, Alberta, native was selected by the Calgary Flames in the third round, 64th overall, in the 2014 NHL Draft before having his draft rights traded to the Arizona Coyotes last summer.
This was the fourth time that Hickey represented Canada at a tournament, as he became just the second Terrier to play for Canada at World Juniors two years ago and also competed at the 2013 World Junior A Challenge (Canada West) and the 2013 World U17 Tournament (Canada Pacific).
Hockey Canada used this year's Spengler Cup as an opportunity to evaluate players who are under consideration for its Olympic squad, which will be announced in mid-January.
