BOSTON – Despite a 22-point effort from
Corrine Williams, the Boston University women's basketball teams second half comeback came up short against Navy, 64-59, Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.
The Terriers trailed by as many as 12 points to start the third quarter, but chipped away at the deficit to make it a one-point game, 60-59, with seven seconds left in regulation. Following converting a pair at the free throw line, Navy forced a turnover on BU's final possession and sealed the game with a fastbreak layup.
Williams' 22 points marked a career-high, as she hit on 8-of-15 from the floor and 3-of-5 from beyond-the-arc to go with seven rebounds.
Sophie Beaudry notched her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
How it Happened
- Naiyah Thompson and Williams put the scoreboard in favor of BU, 5-4, to open the game.
- Navy used the 3-point shot to take the lead, hitting three straight from beyond-the-arc to en route to taking a 15-8 command at the end of the opening quarter.
- Williams heated up to start the second frame, scoring on back-to-back drives to the basket before Tenisha Pressley cashed on a putback layup to put BU within two possessions, 20-14, with 5:14 remaining before the half.
- BU reeled off a 7-0 run after two more layups by Williams and a triple from Payton Hauck, but Navy held the upper hand at the half, 27-21.
- The Mids opened the second stanza with a 6-0 run to take a 12-point lead, their largest of the game, before Katie Nelson and Williams connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to reduce the deficit to 35-27.
- Beaudry and Vanessa Edgehill sparked a 6-0 BU run to put the score at 38-33 with two minutes left in the quarter, though Navy held a 40-35 advantage heading into the fourth.
- The Mids sustained the 3-point shot to start the final frame, putting in three straight from deep once again to take a 10-point lead at 49-39.
- Williams continued to torch the Mids, netting six straight points to make it a one-possession game, 49-47, with 6:07 remaining.
- Nelson converted on a pair from the free throw to cut the gap to one, 52-51, but Navy banked in a 3-pointer to go back up two possessions with 3:01 left on the clock.
- Navy and BU exchanged free throws until Nia Irving hustled for back-to-back layups within an eight-second span to make it a 59-57 game with 19.7 ticks left.
- However, BU turned the ball over for the 21st time on its final possession to drop its third straight game.
Game Notes
- Williams tallied 11 points in the first half, including eight in the second quarter, on 5-of-6 shooting.
- Beaudry's double-double was the fifth of her career.
- Naiyah Thompson and Williams led the Terriers with three assists apiece. Thompson also led the team with two blocks.
- The five-point win was Navy's closest margin of victory this season. The Mids lead the Patriot League with a 15.5 scoring margin.
- BU outrebounded its opponent for the fourth straight games and has collected at least 40 boards three of the last four contests.
