EASTON, Pa. – Down by as many as 16 in the first half, the Boston University men's basketball team used senior
Nick Havener's career-high 21 points to claim a wild 75-72 come-from-behind win at Lafayette.
Holding the Leopards (5-15, 3-6 PL) to 34.5 percent shooting in the second half, the Terriers improve to 11-9 and 7-2 in Patriot League play, as Lafayette suffered its sixth home loss with a final deficit of six points or fewer.
THE TURNING POINT
- Facing an eight-point deficit (44-36) with 15:40 remaining, freshman Walter Whyte intercepted a pass and followed with a slam dunk to ignite a 25-4 run capped by senior Will Goff's 3-pointer at 6:13.
- Freshman Javante McCoy and sophomore Tyler Scanlon hit back-to-back treys in a 35-second span ending at 12:40 to grab the lead for good (48-46).
- The Leopards committed eight of their 12 turnovers during that stretch of play and also missed 10 straight field goal attempts until Justin Jaworski hit a 3-pointer at 3:33 to pull Lafayette within nine (63-54).
FRANTIC FINISH
- Scanlon hit two free throws to give BU its largest lead of the game, 71-56, with one minute remaining.
- Lafayette's Alex Petrie caught fire with 11 of his game-high 22 points in the final 48 seconds following Jaworski's 3-pointer and McCoy's free throw to help the Leopards mount a furious rally.
- The Terriers went 4-of-7 from the line and committed two turnovers that were converted into field goals by Petrie, who cut the deficit to 74-72 on his fourth 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining.
- After McCoy hit his first FT attempt and missed the second, Petrie missed a deep 3-pointer, as the game came to an end.
THE SETUP
- Lafayette came out firing with forwards Matt Klinewski and Paulius Zalys shooting a combined 6-of-7 for a 22-6 lead with 11:12 left in the first half.
- Down 14 with 7:14 remaining, McCoy hit BU's first 3-pointer and two minutes later, sophomore Max Mahoney cut the deficit to single digits (26-17) on a layup at 4:54.
- Klinewski pushed a five-point lead back to nine (32-23) at 1:56 on a short jumper, but the Leopards would never be able to extend the advantage any further.
- Havener took over BU's offense for the final 70 seconds with seven points, including a three-point play on a successful drive and a putback at the buzzer, to cut the deficit to 34-30 entering the locker room.
GAME NOTES
- In a contest featuring 15+ point leads by both teams, there was only one lead change and zero ties.
- BU only led for the final 12:40, topping the previous low in a win of 16:46 set at Bethune-Cookman. That game was also decided by three points (90-87).
- The 16-point deficit doubled the previous season-high of a deficit in a victory. The Terriers trailed 40-32 at Bethune-Cookman before rallying for the win.
- Shooting 57.7 percent in the second half, BU won its first game of the season and improved to 1-6 when trailing at the half this year.
- Havener finished 9-of-13 and 3-of-3 at the charity stripe in just 18 minutes off the bench to top his previous high of 19 points set in the second game of the season against Albany. He's now the third Terrier to reach 20+ points alongside Mahoney and senior Cedric Hankerson.
- Both Whyte (9 pts.) and McCoy (13 pts.) were two rebounds shy of a double-double, as the Terriers out-rebounded Lafayette, 45-28.
- McCoy added four assists, while senior Eric Johnson dished out a season-high five helpers.
- The Terriers were without the leading scorer Hankerson (13.7 ppg), who missed the game following an injury suffered at Navy this past Saturday.
- Klinewski finished with 20 points, two behind Petrie's total, while Zalys had 16 pints, four assists and seven rebounds.
- Lafayette recorded eight steals after entering the game with an average of 3.6 spg and finished with a +5 turnover margin (17-12) but only ended in a tie in points off turnovers, 18-18.
NEXT UP: BUCKNELL
- The Terriers (7-2 PL) will return home on Sunday (Jan. 28) to host defending Patriot League champion Bucknell (8-1 PL) with the CBS Sports Network broadcast set for 12 p.m.
- BU won the first meeting earlier this year, 84-79, in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, to snap a seven-game losing streak to the Bison.
- As part of the matchup, fans will be to see official NCAA Division I basketball championship trophy. Those 18 and older will also be able to participate in a trivia contest at halftime in which $2,000 will be up for grabs.
