BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Taking the floor at Stabler Arena Monday night to kick off a two-game road trip, the Boston University women's basketball team could not overcome a strong second quarter by Lehigh, dropping a 74-58 decision.
Katie Nelson led the Terriers with 13 points, while
Payton Hauck and
Corrine Williams also reached double-digit scoring figures, netting 10 points apiece.
Nia Irving posted a game-high nine rebounds and Hauck dished out a team-high four assists.
How it Happened
- Nelson opened the game with back-to-back triples to give the Terriers a 6-5 edge three minutes in.
- Sophie Beaudry and Williams tabbed back-to-back layups to pull BU ahead, 11-8, midway through the frame before Lehigh stroked a 4-0 run to reclaim the upper hand.
- Nelson hit her third 3-pointer with 2:30 left in the quarter to swing the scoreboard back in favor of the Terriers, 14-12, though the score held at 19-all at the end of the opening frame.
- The Mountain Hawks opened the second stanza with a 5-0 run until Irving and Williams put in two straight baskets to put the game back within one possession, 26-23.
- Hauck continued to chip away at the deficit as she converted on two straight drives through the lane to put BU within four, 33-29, with 5:13 remaining in the second.
- However, Lehigh closed the half with a 12-2 run to head into the break with a 45-29 advantage.
- BU opened the third quarter with an 11-6 run, highlighted by a Kara Sheftic and-1 and a coast-to-coast finish by Naiyah Thompson to make it a 51-38 game.
- Lehigh went up by 19 before the Terriers reeled off a 6-0 run with 3:09 remaining in the quarter, but the Mountain Hawks took a 64-48 lead heading into the final stanza.
- The Terriers were never able to come within more than 14 points in the final frame as saw its two-game win streak against Lehigh snapped.
Game Notes
- The second quarter was the only frame in which either team held a scoring advantage, as Lehigh outscored BU 26-10. The first and third quarters saw each team score 19 points, while both teams scored 10 points in the fourth quarter.
- Neither team led by more than three points through the first quarter.
- Nelson was a perfect 3-for-3 shooting from deep in the first quarter. Nelson has hit at least a trio of 3-pointers in each of the last three games.
- Lehigh won its first contest against BU since 2016 and knotted the all-time series at 6-6.
