Terriers Defeated at No. 8 Northeastern, 2-1

October 28, 2018

BOSTON – The Boston University women's ice hockey team was edged by No. 8 Northeastern, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Matthews Arena.

Sophomore Nara Elia scored an extra-attacker goal with 29.9 seconds remaining in regulation to cut the deficit to 2-1, but BU (1-3-3, 1-3-3 WHEA) was unable to secure an equalizer.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers thought they grabbed a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when Elia finished off a nifty pass by junior Natasza Tarnowski, but after video review the goal was overturned. The referees ruled that Elia, who was being checked by a Husky defender, crashed into goaltender Brittany Bugalski (26 saves) intentionally.
  • Northeastern (5-1-1, 4-0-1 WHEA) opened the scoring at the 15:56 mark of the first period with a power-play goal.
  • The Huskies took a 2-0 lead just 3:00 into the second stanza.
  • BU had a golden chance to get on the board when a 3-on-0 scenario developed after a successful penalty kill, but Tarnowski's try just went wide.
  • The Terriers were terrific in the third period, outshooting the Huskies, 15-1.
  • Elia finally broke through for BU in the final moments of the contest. Sophomore Jesse Compher corralled the puck behind the Northeastern cage and sent it to the front of the net. Freshman Mackenna Parker kept the play alive at the left post before Elia knocked home the loose puck for her second goal of the season.
GAME NOTES
  • Sophomore Corinne Schroeder made 23 saves.
  • Sunday marked the fifth straight game in which BU has held its opponent to two goals or fewer.
  • Parker recorded her first collegiate point with her assist on Elia's goal.
  • Compher extended her point streak to four games (1g, 5a).
  • BU went 0-for-4 on the power play while the Huskies were 1-of-2 with a player advantage.
NEXT UP: UCONN
  • The Terriers will enjoy an 11-day break before they travel to UConn on Friday, Nov. 9.
  • Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m.
