Men's Ice Hockey Visits UNH on Saturday
November 9, 2018 | Men's Ice Hockey
The Boston University men's ice hockey team returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 10) with a road contest at New Hampshire. Game time at Whittemore Center is set for 7 p.m.
The game, which features a pair of first-year head coaches in Albie O'Connell and Mike Souza, will be broadcast on ESPN+.
BU (1-4-1, 1-2-1 Hockey East) will look to carry over the momentum from last week's home-and-home series with Northeastern in which it claimed three of four points. After a 5-5 draw at Matthews Arena, the Terriers posted a 4-1 home win over the Huskies on Saturday.
The Wildcats (1-4-2, 1-1-1 Hockey East) are coming off a 2-2 road draw at UMass Lowell on Friday. UNH held a 2-0 lead for the majority of the contest before the River Hawks got two goals from Ryan Lohin 27 seconds apart in the closing minutes.
In a series that dates back over 90 years, BU and UNH have played 181 times and the Terriers hold a decided advantage, 108-52-21 (.655). BU is undefeated in the past seven meetings (5-0-2) with UNH and has been victorious in 14 of the past 22 (14-6-2). The Terriers are 14-11-6 in 31 all-time visits to the Whittemore Center since opening the building on Nov. 10, 1995.
O'Connell and Souza overlapped three seasons (1996-99) during their playing careers at BU and UNH, respectively, and were both promoted to head coach at their alma maters this past offseason.
UNH's early scoring leader this season is sophomore defenseman Max Gildon, who has team highs in points (7) and assists (6). Three forwards - senior Marcus Vela (3g, 2a), sophomore Charlie Kelleher (5a), freshman Jackson Pierson (2g, 3a) - each have five points thus far and seven other Wildcats have at least one goal.
In goal, sophomore Mike Robinson has started in five of UNH's seven games and sports a 2.52 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage.
UNH has been outscored 10-4 in the first period this season but is an even 10-10 in goals for and against after the opening period. The Wildcats currently rank third in the nation in combined special teams at 62.7 percent (32-of-51).
Senior co-captains Bobo Carpenter (4g, 2a) and Dante Fabbro (3g, 3a) are tied atop the Terriers' scoring list with six points apiece. Sophomore David Farrance has a team-best five assists and juniors Patrick Curry (3g, 1a) and Chad Krys (1g, 3a) each have tallied four points.
Junior goaltender Jake Oettinger was impressive in the Northeastern series, making 64 saves and posting a 1.98 goals-against average and a .941 save percentage over the two games.
