Terriers Fall in Season Opener at Northeastern, 81-51

BOSTON - Senior Lauren Spearman scored a career-high 14 points, but the Boston University women's basketball team lost its season opener at Northeastern, 81-51, on Friday afternoon.

Friday marked the first game in the head coaching career of Marisa Moseley.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Northeastern opened the game on a 7-0 run, but the Terriers battled back to cut the deficit to just six at the end of the first quarter.
  • Spearman was outstanding for the Terriers in the first half, leading BU with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including a 3-of-5 performance from beyond the arc.
  • The Terriers trailed by as many as 13 in the second quarter, but a 7-0 run got BU back within six in the final minute of the half.
  • Northeastern scored five of the final seven points in the quarter, however, to take a 37-28 lead into halftime.
  • The Huskies used a 13-0 run late in the third quarter to take a 61-32 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • BU scored 19 points in the fourth quarter, led by senior Naiyah Thompson's five points.
GAME NOTES
  • Freshman Chiara Tibbitt scored six points and added six rebounds in her collegiate debut.
  • Junior Nia Irving notched nine points and added five boards while Thompson finished with six points and four rebounds.
  • In addition to leading all Terrier scorers, Spearman also had a team-high two steals.
  • Freshman Ashley Sieper scored four points on 2-of-4 shooting and added a pair of rebounds in her collegiate debut.
  • Sophomore Katie Nelson dished out a team-high three assists and added four points while senior Payton Hauck totaled five points and four rebounds.
UP NEXT
  • The Terriers will welcome Brown to Case Gym for their home opener on Monday night.
  • The game will be broadcast live on NESN and the Patriot League Network beginning at 7 p.m.
