Strong Scanlon Stretch Sends Terriers to 65-58 Win at Elon

ELON, N.C. – Completing a six-game road trip, junior Tyler Scanlon scored 12 points during the final 2:42 to help the Boston University men's basketball team finish on a 14-3 run and claim the 65-58 victory at Elon on Saturday afternoon.

Scanlon matched classmate Max Mahoney at 18 points while combining for 15 rebounds, as the Terriers (5-4) avenged last season's 77-68 defeat to the Phoenix (3-5). Sophomore Javante McCoy nearly had a double-double with nine points, a career-tying eight rebounds and four assists. BU held Elon to 32.7 percent shooting and just two offensive rebounds to post an 18-0 advantage in second-chance points.

THE FINAL STRETCH
  • Leading by as many as nine (42-33) at 11:50, Sheldon Eberhardt drained Elon's 10th 3-pointer of the game to pull ahead, 55-51, at 3:54.
  • The Terriers momentarily took the lead, 56-55, at 2:41 following two Mahoney free throws and a Scanlon 3-pointer.
  • Eberthardt drew a foul on the next possession and hit both free throws for the Phoenix's final lead of the game, 58-57, at 2:27.
  • Scanlon responded by hitting a contested layup and free throw 12 seconds later to grab the lead for good.
  • Fouled attempting a shot from behind the arc, Steven Santa Ana only made one free throw at 2:01 and then committed a costly technical foul 40 seconds later.
  • Scanlon flushed both free throws and then following Mahoney's offensive rebound, drove to the hoop and scored on a floater with 33 seconds remaining for the 63-58 advantage.
  • Elon went 0-of-3 from the field and 3-of-7 at the charity stripe with a turnover in the final 3:05 for the loss
THE SETUP
  • In a contest featuring 10 lead changes, sophomore Sukhmail Mathon and Mahoney had a pair of buckets apiece to grab an early 8-2 advantage.
  • The Phoenix responded with an 11-1 spurt capped by two Eberhardt free throws at 10:46 to pull ahead, 13-9.
  • Facing a five-point deficit (16-11), Mahoney scored four straight to spark a 15-2 run ended by redshirt-freshman Alex Vilarino's layup at 2:48.
  • Santa Ana hit a 3-pointer just before the buzzer to put BU's lead at 28-25, entering the locker room.
  • Scanlon followed Mathon's second-half opening layup with a 3-pointer to tie BU's largest lead of the game at eight points (33-25).
  • Santa Ana though flushed back-to-back bombs to ignite Elon's 17-0 run that was capped by Seth Fuller's 3-pointer at 11:50 for the 42-33 lead.
  • Trailing, 46-39, with 10:00 remaining, BU held the Phoenix off the scoreboard 2:20 and eventually tied the game, 46-46, on Scanlon's layup.
  • Freshman Jordan Guest momentarily gave BU a 51-49 lead on a 3-pointer with 5:26, but Eberhardt hit back-to-back treys to grab the 55-51 lead at 3:54.
GAME NOTES
  • Sitting at 5-4, BU is off to its best start through nine games since opening 6-3 in 2013-14.
  • The Terriers won for the first time this season when finishing behind in made 3-pointers, as Elon had 10 bombs (10-of-29, 34.5 3FG%) against BU's four (4-of-23, 17.4 3FG%).
  • BU was outscored off the bench for the first time this season in nine contests, 13-12, and also finished with more free throws against an opponent for the first time, 13-12.
  • Both freshmen Garrett Pascoe and Jack Hemphill had five rebounds apiece to help the Terriers win the battle at the boards, 47-28.
  • By evening the all-time series against Elon, 1-1, the Terriers improved to 2-1 against the CAA this year with a win at Northeastern and loss at Drexel.
  • Eberhardt led all players with 20 points and five assists, while Santa Ana owned 19 points and eight rebounds for the Phoenix.
NEXT UP: UMASS LOWELL
  • After undertaking their longest road trip since the 2004-05 season, the Terriers will return home and host UMass Lowell on Tuesday (Dec. 4) at 7 p.m.
  • BU has already avenged two losses from last season (Northeastern, Elon) and will try to duplicate those efforts against the River Hawks after UML prevailed at home last year, 87-82.
