Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Dartmouth Downs Men's Basketball in Air Attack, 78-68

HANOVER, N.H. – Despite finishing with a higher field goal shooting percentage, the Boston University men's basketball team fell at Dartmouth, 78-68, on Thursday night.

The Terriers (6-5) finished 29-of-54 (.537) in their first game since Dec. 4, but the Big Green (7-5) flushed 14 3-pointers as part of a 30-of-59 (.509) overall shooting performance to claim their third win in six days and improve to 5-1 at home this season. Dartmouth entered the contest ranked fifth nationally in made 3-pointers per game (11.7), while BU ranked 17th in defensive 3-point field goal percentage (.274).

Junior Max Mahoney went 10-of-14 from the field en route to 22 points, while Dartmouth's Brendan Barry tallied 31 points with the help of eight 3-pointers and six assists. Chris Knight helped the home team's cause with 20 points and a game-high nine rebounds, as Dartmouth shut out BU in second-chance points, 13-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Dartmouth opened with a 3-pointer, the Terriers responded by scoring the next eight points with sophomore Javante McCoy and freshman Garrett Pascoe draining back-to-back treys.
  • The Big Green retook the lead, 14-12, on a 7-0 spurt capped by Barry's layup.
  • BU briefly tied its largest lead of the half, 21-16, at 9:24 with junior Tyler Scanlon hitting a 3-pointer and layup.
  • Scanlon had a steal and layup at 3:29 to put the Terriers ahead, 27-26, but they finished the half missing their last two field goal attempts while also committing two turnovers.
  • Barry hit two 3-pointers in the final 75 seconds to give Dartmouth a 32-27 halftime lead, as the teams combined for six lead changes and three ties.
  • Mahoney netted BU's first two baskets to start the second, but the Big Green had a response each time to prevent the Terriers from pulling closer than three points.
  • After Barry hit a 3-pointer, the Terriers were called with a flagrant on an inadvertent elbow against a smaller defender, which led to two Dartmouth free throws, a layup and 10-point Big Green advantage (41-31) at 16:59.
  • McCoy hit a trey and was followed by Mahoney's layup, but Barry again hit a 3-pointer to create distance for Dartmouth.
  • McCoy pulled the Terriers within seven (59-52) at 8:18 on a layup, but Dartmouth hit two more bombs during an 8-0 run to grab their largest lead, 67-52, at 6:36.
  • Dartmouth sealed the win in the final minute by hitting a pair of free throws and breaking the BU press for a slam dunk after the Terriers cut the deficit to 74-66.
GAME NOTES
  • After tallying 23 points in last week's 79-60 home win over UMass Lowell, Mahoney has now recorded 20+ points in back-to-back games for the second time in his career.
  • McCoy was a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the arc and finished second on the team with 16 points.
  • Barry tied Northeastern's Vasa Pusica for the most points scored by an individual this season against the Terriers.

  • The Big Green out-rebounded BU, 36-22, to overcome the Terriers finishing ahead in points off turnovers, 18-10.
  • Dartmouth snapped a two-game losing streak in the series in the first meeting between the two programs since 2002 and now leads the all-time series, 22-7.
