LOWELL, Mass. – Visiting UMass Lowell in its first road test of the season, the Boston University women's lacrosse team picked up its first victory of the season, handing the River Hawks a 14-10 defeat Wednesday afternoon at Cushing Field.
Kailey Conry,
Avery Donahoe, and
Bridget McCarthy paced the attack as each netted a hat trick, while Conry dished out a game-high five assists as part of an eight-point day.
Bianca Smith earned her first career start in net, finishing with seven saves over all 60 minutes of action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The River Hawks struck first four minutes in, though the lead was short-lived as Conry found Donahoe from behind the cage for the equalizer.
- McCarthy gave the Terriers the lead midway through the half before UMass Lowell promptly delivered an equalizer of its own, but Donahoe swung the scoreboard back in favor of the Terriers by bouncing in a free position look at the 10-minute mark.
- Kelly Mathews kicked off three straight Terrier strikes in a 36-second span, as Conry and Sarah Anderson also found the back of the net to push the command to 6-2 with six minutes left in the half.
- UMass Lowell went on a scoring streak of its own, netting two straight goals within a 16-second span to cut the gap to two.
- BU's offense continued to punish UMass Lowell on the free position, as Kaitlin Belval netted the Terriers' third free position goal of the half to reclaim a three-goal advantage.
- UMass Lowell had the final say of opening half, snapping the back of the net with just over a minute left to make it a 7-5 game at the break.
- McCarthy and Conry each netted their second goal of the game to reenergize the offense before Donahoe pushed BU's run to 3-0, giving the Terriers their largest lead of the game at 10-5 with 23 minutes remaining.
- The River Hawks would not go down quietly as they roped in three straight scores to make it a two-score game, 10-8, with 15 minutes to go.
- Conry snuck in her third score of the game, while Belval notched her second to put BU ahead by four with 12 minutes left.
- Once again, UMass Lowell reduced the deficit to two with just under seven minutes left, but Molly Kern and McCarthy delivered insurance goals as BU held the River Hawks scoreless down the stretch.
GAME NOTES
- Conry matched a career-high with three goals and led all players with eight points.
- Maria Guerra led the defense with four ground balls to set a new career-high.
