No. 20 Terriers Rally for 12-11 Overtime Win over Providence

BOSTON – After senior Ryan Hilburn tied the game with 7.8 seconds remaining in regulation, sophomore John MacLean's winner with 47 seconds left in overtime gave the No. 20 Boston University men's lacrosse team a dramatic 12-11 victory over Providence on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

HOW WE GOT TO OVERTIME
  • Providence led, 10-7, early in the second half before the Terriers tallied the next three goals to even the score with 6:26 left in the fourth quarter.
  • Sean Leahey found the back of the net with just 1:38 left to give Providence an 11-10 lead, and the Friars won the ensuing faceoff.
  • After a Terrier timeout, senior Isaac Lipton and sophomore Chase Levesque combined to force a turnover and give BU a final possession.
  • Hilburn delivered with his second goal of the day, spinning through a sea of bodies in front of the cage to send the game to overtime.
IN THAT OT...
  • The Terriers started with the ball after Providence took a 30-second penalty at the end of regulation.
  • BU survived the shot clock being put on them and kept possession for the entire overtime.
  • Freshman Chris Gray eventually fed MacLean, and the sophomore ripped home a shot low to high for the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Terriers took a quick 2-0 thanks to goals by Hilburn and junior James Burr.
  • After Providence tied it, 2-2, Burr tallied the first of two Terrier man-up goals to reclaim a one-goal edge before Providence answered with just one second to spare in the opening quarter.
  • Gray dazzled the crowd with a nifty behind-the-back finish for his first collegiate goal to once again give BU a one-goal lead.
  • Providence got the next two goals before Gray found MacLean for the sophomore's first marker of the contest with 6:46 left in Q2.
  • After PC took a 7-5 lead, MacLean and senior Hayden Ruiz each scored to tie the game before Providence responded with the final two goals of the half.
  • Freshman Tommy Nook's first collegiate goal with 3:30 left in the third quarter got the score to 10-9 before MacLean once again tied it with 6:26 to play.
ANOTHER THRILLER IN THE OPENER
  • This was the second straight year that BU and Providence opened the season with an overtime thriller.
  • BU earned an 8-7 victory in double overtime in Rhode Island last year.

  • MacLean's four goals is a career high for him. He had two hat tricks last season.
  • Burr finished with four points (2g, 2a) while Ruiz notched three points (1g, 2a).
  • Freshman goalkeeper Joe McSorley made his first collegiate start and stopped 12 shots, including five in the third quarter to help BU get back into the game.
