FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Needing extra time for the second straight season against Fairfield,
Kelly Mathews netted the golden goal with 5:23 left in double overtime to guide the Boston University women's lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory against the Stags Wednesday afternoon at Conway Field.
Trailing by two at the half,
Avery Donahoe sparked the comeback with five goals of BU's seven goals in the second half en route to matching a career-high with six scores on the day.
Christine Laible picked up her first win of the season in net, finishing with 12 saves, including seven in the first half.
How It Happened
- Bridget McCarthy made the first dent in the scoreboard by going upper 90 off a feed from Emily Vervlied two minutes in.
- Fairfield answered two minutes later by converting on a free position chance.
- Avery Donahoe worked her way from behind the cage and put on a dodge move to put BU back on top, 2-1, with 20:50 left in the opening half.
- Lexi Lewis cushioned the lead by streaking uncontested from midfield to the net, making it 3-1 at the halfway point in the opening frame.
- After holding the Stags scoreless for 13 minutes, Fairfield caught fire on the attack, using a 4-0 run to take a 5-3 advantage at the break.
- Donahoe worked another dodge move to kick off the second half scoring before delivering the equalizer with 23:33 left in regulation.
- The Stags responded just over the minute later by scoring off turnovers to go back up by two.
- Caroline English ripped a shot past the Stags' keeper to make it a one-goal game until Donahoe continued her second-half assault on net with back-to-back scores.
- Conry kept the offense red-hot, converting on a ridiculous behind-the-head shot to cap a 4-0 run as BU claimed a 9-7 advantage with 8:43 remaining.
- Fairfield stormed back with two straight scores in just under a minute to knot the score at nine-all.
- Donahoe matched her career-high in style, slotting her sixth score of the game by splitting the defense with 2:46 on the clock to put the Terriers back on top, but Fairfield delivered the equalizer just under a minute later as the score held at 10-10 at the end of regulation.
- The Terriers fended off a pair of shots in the opening minute of the first overtime, while Caroline English's last-second shot was deflected as the game headed into another frame of overtime.
- Mathews won the opening draw of the second overtime to set up the offense before netting the game-winner off a dish from Conry.
Game Notes
- Wednesday marked the second straight season the Terriers and Stags needed overtime. BU won the prior matchup, 10-9, in extra time at Nickerson Field as Conry netted the game-winner with 1:18 remaining.
- Conry, Donahoe and McCarthy each extended their point streaks and are the only Terriers who have scored in all five games this season.
- Donahoe scored on all six of her shots.
- Conry dished out at least three assists for the third time this season.
- Laible recorded her third double-digit save effort of the season in net.
- Maria Guerra set a new career-high with five ground balls.
- Fairfield scored three of its first four goals on man-up situations.
