BOSTON – Behind a career-high eight goals by
Avery Donahoe, the Boston University women's lacrosse team closed out non-conference play with a 16-13 victory over New Hampshire Wednesday evening at Nickerson Field.
Donahoe notched six goals in the first half, while her eight goals were the most a Terrier has scored since Danielle Etrasco notched eight against Ohio State on March 16, 2013. The senior connected on 8-of-11 shots on frame and also provided assist as part a nine-point day.
How It Happened
- Caroline English put the Terriers on the board first on a free position shot just over a minute into play.
- New Hampshire answered 27 seconds later before Ryann Gaffney put the Terriers back in front, and Donahoe snapped back-to-back goals to put BU ahead by three.
- The Wildcats ripped two straight scores of their own until Kelly Mathews stroked a free position shot into the lower 90 to reclaim the two-goal command.
- Donahoe connected on a slick shovel shot and Gaffney followed to push the Terriers to a 7-4 command midway through the opening frame.
- The senior co-captain stayed hot by zipping in three of the next four Terrier scores, pushing the lead to 11-5 with 6:49 to go until the break.
- Kaitlin Belval closed out the half by converting on a free position chance with nine seconds left, sending BU to the locker room with a 12-6 grip on the scoreboard.
- New Hampshire struck first to start the second frame, but Donahoe continued her assault on the cage by roping back-to-back goals to push the score to 14-7 in favor of BU with 22:17 remaining.
- The Wildcats exploded for an 8-1 run, cutting the score to 15-13 with 3:06 left.
- Gaffney delivered the dagger by scoring an empty-net goal with 16 seconds to secure BU's third straight victory.
Game Notes
- BU dominated on the draw, holding a 23-8 advantage, including a 15-4 edge in the first half.
- Kaitlin Belval continued her dominance at the X, winning a career-high nine decisions, while Mackenzie Howe also notched a career-best with eight draw controls.
- Belval has won 23 draw controls over the last three games and has picked up at least seven in each.
- Tonianne Magnelli led the team with four ground balls and four caused turnovers.
- Christine Laible posted nine saves in net.
- BU has won its last 11 games at Nickerson Field has not dropped home contest against the Wildcats since 2004.
- Additionally, BU has won three straight matchups against New Hampshire for the first time since 2009-10.
