WEST POINT, N.Y. - Despite capturing the doubles point and winning the first set in five singles matches, the Boston University women's tennis team ultimately came up just short at Army West Point, 4-3, in the final contest of the regular season for both programs.
Avenging last year's Patriot League tournament loss to the Terriers (8-12, 3-1 PL), the Black Knights (18-6, 6-1 PL) improve to 16-1 at home this season. Army also beat BU, 4-2, in last year's regular season finale before the Terriers captured the automatic NCAA berth, 4-1, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Remi Ramos and freshman Lily Burchell cruised to a 6-0 win at line 1 in doubles, while senior Iryna Kostirko and freshman Emily Kim held off Army, 6-4, in the No. 2 slot.
- The Black Knights avoided the doubles sweep with a 6-3 win at line 3.
- In singles, the Terriers were seemingly in control winning the first set in five of the six matches but only ended up capturing two singles points.
- Freshman Katya Martens (#5) dropped the fewest games with a dominating 6-1, 6-2 win, while Kim posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory at line 3.
- Army rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 win in the No. 6 slot and then rallied for three-set victories at lines 1 and 4 against Kostirko (2-6, 6-4, 6-2) and Burchell (2-6, 6-3, 6-3), respectively.
- After winning a hard-fought first set, Ramos only won two games in the second but bounced back to force a third-set tiebreaker with the final point up for grabs in the No. 2 slot.
- Melanie Allen, however, prevailed in the tiebreaker to give Army the team win, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(5).
NEXT UP: PATRIOT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT

- BU has won two titles as the No. 1 seed and a pair of titles as the No. 2 seed, including last year's event.
