CAMDEN, NJ - The Boston University women's rowing team will compete in the Patriot League Championship Regatta on Friday, May 11 with racing set to begin at 8:00 a.m. on the Cooper River in Camden County, N.J.
Â
The Terriers will be competing for their first Patriot League crown since 2014 and an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
"The team is gaining momentum as we head into the Patriot League Championship," said director of women's rowing
Madeline Davis. "We've seen significant improvement throughout the squad over the course of the spring season, from the Varsity 8+ right through to our spares. Our team has matured a lot through hard training and challenging racing all spring. We're looking forward to testing ourselves against the rest of the league."
Â
Last year, the Terriers' varsity eight boat finished first in the championship eight race and was named PL Boat of the Year as the Terriers finished just five points behind PL Champion Navy.
Â
BU will send out three boats to compete on Friday, the varsity eight, the second varsity eight and the varsity four. The Terriers enter the regatta seeded No. 2 in the V8, No. 4 in the 2V8 and No. 5 in the V4. The first race for the Terriers will be at 8:15 a.m. when the V8 boat takes on No. 3 Bucknell, No. 6 Lehigh and No. 7 Colgate in heat racing.
Â
The top three finishers in each heat, regardless of time, will move on to the grand final with the remaining squads participating in a petite final.
Â
The competition will be scored on a weighted scale, with nine points going to the winner of the varsity four grand final, 18 points for the winner of the second varsity eight grand final and 27 for the varsity eight grand final. The PL Championship will be awarded to the school that accumulates the most points in all three races and that team will advance to the NCAA Championships on May 25-27 in Sarasota, Fla. If there is a tie, the higher-place finisher of the V8 race is crowned PL Champion.
Â
The Terriers will look to break Navy's recent run of success as the Mids have won the last three Patriot League titles. BU was the last team other than Navy to win the championship, taking home the PL crown in 2014. Â
