BOSTON - Hockey alumni from Boston University and Boston College gathered at Walter Brown Arena on Friday evening for the fourth-annual Comm Ave Charity Classic, helping to raise a record $78,432 for the Travis Roy Foundation and Compassionate Care ALS.
The rivalry game featured an impressive amount of NHL talent on both sides. With the help of recent alums from Harvard and Northeastern, the Terriers broke open a close game in the third period to come out on top by a score of 10-5.
BC got on the board first before Harvard's Ryan Donato put together a natural hat trick in 74 seconds in the late stages of the opening period to give BU a 3-1 lead after one. Each team scored twice in the middle period before the Eagles opened the third with a tally from Chris Kreider. The Terriers strung together five straight goals, including two from Jack Eichel to close out the win. Eichel's Buffalo Sabres teammate Evan Rodrigues and Northeastern's Adam Gaudette also had a pair of goals for BU.
With this year's record amount, the four-year total for the event is now over $188,000. Former BC players Pat Mullane and Andrew Orpik started the event in 2015 in honor of longtime BC sports information director Dick Kelley, who lost his battle with ALS in 2014, and former BC baseball captain Pete Frates, who continues to put up an inspirational fight against the disease. Now the event supports both the Travis Roy Foundation and Compassionate Care ALS. Roy, who was paralyzed in his first college hockey game as a Terrier at Walter Brown nearly 23 years ago, has helped hundreds of others who have suffered spinal-cord injuries through his foundation.
Fourteen former Terriers came back to campus to participate in the event on Friday, ranging from Jay Pandolfo, who starred at BU from 1992-96, all to way to Brandon Hickey and Drew Melanson, who were seniors on last season's squad.
