Terriers Rally for 4-3 Road Win over No. 7/8 Providence
January 12, 2019 | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Boston University men's ice hockey team put together its gutsiest win of the season on Saturday evening, rallying for a 4-3 come-from-behind road win over No. 7/8 Providence at Schneider Arena.
All of BU's scoring came from sophomores, capped by Logan Cockerill's game-winner with 11:57 to play.
BU erased an early 2-0 deficit with a pair of goals from sophomore Shane Bowers before giving up a goal to PC in the opening seconds of the third. Sophomore David Farrance drew the Terriers even at 3-3.
The Terriers extend their unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1) and improve to 8-8-3 overall and 7-5-2 in Hockey East play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams got early power-play chances and the Friars capitalized on theirs thanks to a right-circle wrister by Josh Wilkins to establish a 1-0 lead.
- Less than three minutes later, PC doubled its lead when Scott Conway cleaned up a rebound near the right crease.
- Bowers started the BU comeback, shelving a backhand at the foot of the right circle on a delayed penalty at 11:09 of the first.
- The lone goal of the middle period was the result of an impressive rush by the Terriers as Bowers and freshman Joel Farabee passed back and forth three times before Bowers potted his second of the night at 11:07 to make it a 2-2 affair.
- Conway allowed the Friars to regain the lead just 11 seconds into the third when he knocked home a puck at the top of the crease after having his initial attempt blocked.
- The lead did not last long as senior Bobo Carpenter picked off a clearing attempt by PC and slid the puck over to Farrance, who blasted home a shot from the top of the left circle, creating the second deadlock of the game at 3:07 of the third.
- The game-winning play started and ended with Cockerill as the sophomore forced a turnover in the neutral zone before collecting a pass from Carpenter at the left dot, where he wristed home a shot that found the top right corner of the net.
- PC applied some offensive pressure but any momentum was lost when Vimal Sukumaran was issued a major with 4:38 to play for hitting Farrance from behind into the boards.
- While shorthanded, the Friars created a breakaway chance for Matt Koopman with a minute to play but junior Jake Oettinger was up to the task.
GAME NOTES
- Carpenter finished with a career-best three assists.
- Oettinger made 33 saves in goal for the Terriers while Hayden Hawkey stopped 22 BU shots.
- Farrance, Farabee and junior Dante Fabbro all recorded a plus-3 rating.
- Sophomore Kasper Kotkansalo registered a game-high six blocked shots after blocking five in Friday's win.
- Only four teams in the country (Clarkson, Denver, Lake Superior, Western Michigan) have longer current unbeaten streaks than BU.
UP NEXT
- The Terriers will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 19) when they kick off a five-game homestand with a contest against No. 6 Quinnipiac.
- Game time at Agganis Arena is set for 7 p.m.
