BOSTON – Holding a 17-point lead late in the third quarter, the Boston University women's basketball team saw its grip on the scoreboard fade as Colgate used a second-half comeback pull away with an 81-72 decision Wednesday night at Case Gym.
The Raiders used a 44-18 run over the final 15:25 of play to flip the outcome of the game, handing BU its first defeat on its home court this season.
Nia Irving posted her third double-double of the season with 19 points to go with a career-high 15 rebounds.
Payton Hauck led the Terriers with 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting, while
Naiyah Thompson also reached double figures with 10 points.
How It Happened
- Thompson and Hauck netted the opening two baskets in the paint before the Raiders streaked a 12-1 run to take a seven-point advantage.
- Hauck recharged the offense with a corner 3-pointer and followed with a coast-to-coast drive to make it a one-possession game at 14-11.
- Nia Irving capped a 10-2 Terrier run to end the quarter by converting on and-1, though Colgate retained a three-point lead.
- From there, Hauck took over the game, carving through the Raider defense on her way to the basket for three straight layups.
- Riley Childs added to the lead with two moves in the post to push the score to 33-22 with 4:02 left before the half.
- Vanessa Edgehill kept the offense clicking by connecting twice from 3-point range, while Hauck closed out a 15-point effort in the first half with another drive in the final seconds to make it a 40-29 game at the break.
- Utilizing the free throw line, BU stormed ahead to a 54-37 command with 4:35 left to play.
- Colgate caught fire late once again, churning a 16-3 run to close the third, but the Terriers still maintained a 57-53 edge.
- The Raiders kept firing from beyond-the-arc, using two straight 3-pointers to take the lead, 59-58, early in the fourth.
- Riley Childs tied the game up for the fifth time in a four-minute span, 66-66, by cashing in a feed from Katie Nelson with 3:50 remaining.
- However, Colgate would not cave in as it closed the game with a 15-6 run to hand the Terriers their first conference defeat.
