BOSTON – Opening a two-game homestand, the Boston University men's basketball team fell to Colgate, 77-56, on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.
Northwestern transfer Rapolas Ivanauskas led the Raiders (11-8, 3-3 PL) with a game-high 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Malcolm Regisford came up one rebound shy of a second double-double with 11 points. Junior
Tyler Scanlon recorded a team-high 14 points, as the Terriers (9-10, 2-4 PL) were held to their second-lowest offensive output of the season.
TURNING POINT
- Facing a 42-33 halftime deficit, the Terriers scored the first two buckets in the second stanza and eventually pulled within four at 15:55 (45-41) and 13:47 (47-43).
- However, the Raiders went on a 7-0 spurt capped by Francisco Amiel's 3-pointer at 11:44 to help give the Raiders some breathing room.
- Owning a 60-51 advantage with 7:53 remaining, Colgate went on a 15-3 run over the next six minutes to put the game away.
THE SETUP
- Colgate won the tip-off and quickly drew a shooting foul before hitting a free throw to take the lead for good.
- Jordan Burns hit three field goals to extend the lead to 13-2 at 15:09.
- Facing a 21-10 deficit with 11:15 remaining in the half, the Terriers scored eight of the next 10 points with 3-pointers from freshman Jonas Harper and sophomore Andrew Petcash, but Jack Ferguson hit one of his three bombs at 7:41 to halt the BU run.
- After the teams went back and forth over the next six minutes, junior Max Mahoney hit the final field goal of the half on a layup with 55 seconds remaining.
- BU had one more look but missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer to enter the locker room trailing, 41-33.
GAME NOTES
- Entering the game at a team-high 17.6 ppg, Mahoney saw his streak of games with 10+ points snapped at a career-high 10 contests, as he was held to seven points on 2-of-5 shooting with three free throws on three attempts while contributing four assists.
- Both freshmen Jordan Guest and Harper tallied nine points apiece with Guest adding a team-high six rebounds.
- The Terriers were held to 29.2 FG% in the second half to finish the game 20-of-54 FG (.370) and 7-of-24 3FG (.292), while Colgate went 28-of-56 FG (.500) and 7-of-19 3FG (.368).
- The Raiders outscored BU off turnovers, 15-2, with a 16-11 advantage in second-chance points.
- Colgate became just the second opponent this season to finish with more points off the bench (26-21).
- BU now leads the all-time series, 27-21.
NEXT UP: AMERICAN
- Due to anticipated inclement weather and its impact on travel along the East Coast, Monday's home game against the Eagles has been postponed to Wednesday (Jan. 23) with a 5 p.m. start time.
- The contest will also now be part of a doubleheader, as the BU and American women had their originally scheduled tip-off time pushed back to 7:30 p.m.
- American won the earlier matchup at home, 86-74, back on Jan. 2 in the conference openers for both men's teams.
