The Terriers were blanked by the Warriors, 4-0, in their Hockey East opener back on Oct. 20. BU will be looking to rebound from a 4-3 loss to No. 7/6 Quinnipiac on Saturday, snapping a five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1).
BU and Merrimack have played 116 times since first meeting on Dec. 11, 1964, and the Terriers hold a commanding 88-20-8 (.793) advantage. The Terriers are 34-9-4 against the Warriors since the start of the 2004-05 season and are 20-3-2 in the 25 meetings that have taken place at Agganis Arena. BU recorded the first 14 shutouts in the series until the Warriors blanked the Terriers for the first time ever earlier this season.
Merrimack had a three-game win streak snapped on Friday in a 5-0 home loss to New Hampshire. The Warriors are currently ninth in the Hockey East standings, two points behind Maine for the eighth and final playoff spot.
Junior Tyler Irvine leads the team in points (16) and assists (11) while freshman Chase Gresock is right behind with 15 points on the strength of a team-best six goals. Junior Johnathan Kovacevic leads the offense from the blue line with 12 points on four goals and eight assists.
Seniors Craig Pantano and Drew Vogler have split time in goal with Pantano holding advantages in save percentage (.896 - .860) and goals-against average (3.12 - 4.15).
Scott Borek is in his first season as Merrimack's head coach, joining Albie O'Connell and UNH's Mike Souza as first-year bench bosses in the league this year.
In this year's league opener, the Warriors scored twice in the first eight minutes of play and added one more in each of the final two periods before Pantano secured the shutout with a 34-save performance. BU held a 34-28 shot advantage but came up empty on seven power-play chances.
On Saturday against Quinnipiac, BU erased deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 before giving up the game-winner with 2.5 seconds left in regulation. Sophomore Ty Amonte recorded a shorthanded goal and an assist for the Terriers, who also got goals from junior Patrick Curry and sophomore Shane Bowers. Amonte had the first multi-point game of his collegiate career.
After 13 games this season, Boston University was averaging only 2.08 goals per game and shooting just 6.3 percent. In their past seven contests, the Terriers are averaging 3.71 goals on 12.7-percent shooting.
Sophomore Shane Bowers (3g, 1a) and junior Dante Fabbro (1g, 4a) are both on three-game point streaks while freshman Joel Farabee has six points (3g, 3a) over the past five games. Senior Bobo Carpenter is one point away from reaching 100 for his career.
