Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

No. 11 Providence Spoils Farrance's Career Night in 6-5 Loss

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Despite a career night by junior David Farrance, the Boston University men's ice hockey team was edged, 6-5, by No. 11 Providence on Saturday evening at Schneider Arena.

Farrance tallied his first collegiate hat trick and added an assist for a career-high four points after recording two third-period goals in Friday night's 3-3 draw with the Friars in Boston.

Freshman Trevor Zegras recorded a goal and two assists for the second consecutive night while classmate Ethan Phillips scored his first collegiate goal.

The Terriers move to 2-3-4 overall and 1-2-3 in Hockey East.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The back-and-forth affair provided scoring all night long as each team scored in all three periods.
  • Providence tallied three power-play goals on the night and opened the scoring with one at the 11:31 mark of the first.
  • BU responded just 26 seconds later, however, as Farrance potted his first of the night on assists from junior Jake Witkowski and freshman Markus Boguslavsky.
  • Farrance gave BU what would be its only lead of the night with a power-play tally at 14:34 of the first.
  • Providence made it a 2-2 affair moments later when Jamie Engelbert took advantage of a fortunate carom off the back boards.
  • The second period featured five goals beginning with the Friars regaining the lead at 3-2 off a power-play marker by Max Crozier at the 4:10 mark.
  • BU appeared to take a 3-2 lead on a power-play snipe by junior Patrick Harper but Providence had a successful challenge due to the play being offsides.
  • The Friars took the momentum from the overturn and caught another break to take a 4-2 advantage off a power play as a referee blew dead a play thinking BU netminder Sam Tucker made a save but then signaled for a goal as he got closer to the net.
  • The Terriers were able to wipe away the deficit though, first getting a goal from Zegras after the Terriers got PC netminder Michael Lackey out of position just under a minute after PC established the two-goal cushion.
  • Farrance both capped his hat trick and evened the score on a power-play blast from just inside the blue line at 12:27 of the third.
  • Tyce Thompson gave the Friars the lead for good just over a minute later, allowing the home team to take a 3-2 advantage into the second intermission.
  • PC once again took a two-goal lead early in the third when a shot by Crozier from the blue line went off BU netminder Vinnie Purpura and trickled in for the eventual game-winner.
  • Phillips gave the Terriers some late hope when he potted a rebound at the right post with 7:08 to play for his first goal as a Terrier.

GAME NOTES
  • Farrance now leads all college hockey defensemen in both goals (8) and points (14).
  • Boguslavsky's assist was his first collegiate point.
  • Tucker earned his sixth straight start in the BU goal and made 20 saves while allowing four goals.
  • Purpura came on in relief after the Friars took a 4-2 lead but gave up two goals on seven shots and Tucker went back in, keeping the Friars scoreless for the final 17:03.
  • The Friars got a 24-save performance from Lackey.
  • Providence held a 34-29 advantage in shots.
