CANCUN, Mexico – In a matchup featuring eight lead changes and six ties during the second half, the University of Tennessee at Martin scored the game's final four points from the charity stripe to edge the Boston University men's basketball team, 76-73, on Wednesday afternoon at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya.
With the win in the consolation game of the Cancun Challenge's Mayan Division, the Skyhawks improve to 3-4, while the Terriers drop to 3-5. UTM's Craig Randall went 5-of-10 from behind the arc en route to a game-high 25 points and finished five ahead of teammate Quintin Dove (20 pts.). Both senior
Max Mahoney (14 pts., 9 rebs.) and sophomore
Walter Whyte (10 pts., 8 rebs.) nearly had double-doubles for BU. Sophomores
Jonas Harper (14 pts.) and
Alex Vilarino (13 pts.) also reached double figures.
DOWN THE STRETCH
- Vilarino's floater in the paint gave BU a 68-64 advantage with 5:06 left, but the Terriers went 2-of-7 the rest of the way with a missed free throw attempt.
- Dove scored on a quick layup on the next possession and tied the game for the final time, 68-68, at 4:08 on a pair of free throws.
- Derek Hawthorne Jr. added another bucket at 3:25 to granb 70-68 lead, but following a called timeout, Harper flushed his final 3-pointer with 2:55 remaining.
- After Dove retook the lead for UTM on a jump shot, Mahoney scored on the layup but missed the ensuing free throw attempt for 73-72 lead.
- Parker Stewart drew a foul on the next possession and hit both free throws.
- UTM then contested a tear drop attempt from Vilarino and watched Dove hit two more free throws.
- The Skyhawks decided not to foul, and the Terriers nearly made them pay.
- BU was able to find Harper near the corner for a quality 3-point attempt, but it was just off for the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU converted on steals by Harper and Vilarino to jump out to 4-0 lead.
- Leading 7-6 at 16:17 after Hawthorne's jumper, Harper flushed three 3-pointers to spark a 22-11 advantage in points over the next nine minutes.
- Whyte hit a floater to give BU's it largest lead of the game, 29-17, at 7:46.
- Facing a 31-21 deficit with 5:30 left in the half, Randall took over for the rest of the half with 14 points, highlighted by four 3-pointers, to help UTM mount a rally.
- Randall II reached 20 points for the game on a trey with a hand in his face to give the Skyhawks their first lead of the game entering the locker room, 41-40.
- Mahoney scored the second half's first three points and extended the lead to 51-45 at 15:53 on two free throws.
- After sophomore Fletcher Tynen hit a layup on a great pass from classmate Jack Hemphill, the Skyhawks went on a 9-0 run capped by Randall's 3-pointer with 12:44 remaining.
- Petcash and Whyte hit back-to-bombs and watched Mahoney's layup give the Terriers a 63-58 lead at 10:30.
GAME NOTES
- Mahoney earned All-Mayan Division honors after averaging 15 pts. and seven rebs. in the two bracket games during the Cancun Challenge.
- BU led for 32:35 and suffered its first loss of the season when more than two players score in double figures.
- The Terriers moved to 1-1 all-time against UTM after winning the first meeting, 67-64, at a 1991 tournament hosted by Indiana.
- The Skyhawks outscored BU off turnovers (19-10), in the paint (40-28) and in second-chance points (12-7).
- BU went 10-of-30 from behind the arc to finish the game at 46.4 FG%, while UTM went 7-of-22 3FG to finish 30-of-61 (.492).
