CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Senior
Abigail Gugel of the Boston University women's cross country team has been named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Wednesday.
Gugel, the 2019 Patriot League champion, has excelled both in competition and in the classroom. She boasts an impressive 3.61 GPA as a biology major. She is a four-time Dean's List selection and is a three-time member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
While she saved her best performance at last week's conference meet, Gugel has been outstanding all season. She began 2019 with a win at the Harry Lang Invitational and added another top-five finish at the Princeton Invitational, where she crossed the line in fourth to lead BU to its second of three team titles. Gugel then shined brightest at the Patriot League Championship, cruising to a 16-second victory to lead the Terriers to their third Patriot League cross country title.
Gugel, a native of Jordan, New York, is the program's first-ever Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She also becomes the sixth BU harrier to earn a spot on the Academic All-Patriot League squad.
