Men's Basketball Holds Off Dartmouth, 78-76

BOSTON – Featuring five Terriers in double figures for the first time this season, the Boston University men's basketball team claimed a 78-76 win over Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym.

BU (4-7) posted a season-high 58.7 field goal shooting percentage in its first home appearance since Nov. 16 to snap a five-game losing streak and avenge last year's 78-68 loss to the Big Green (6-5). Facing a nine-point deficit with 55 seconds remaining, Dartmouth pulled within one (77-76) at 5.8 seconds but was unable to get off a game-tying attempt at the buzzer after the Terriers went 1-of-2 at the line.

Nine of the 10 matchup's starters finished in double figures. Sophomore Walter Whyte (17 pts.) and senior Max Mahoney (16 pts.) combined for 33 points and added six rebounds apiece, while junior Javante McCoy tallied 14 points and career-high eight assists. Sophomore Jonas Harper earned 12 points to finish two ahead of classmate Alex Vilarino, who added five rebounds. Taurus Samuels (22 pts.) and James Foye (17 pts.) combined for all five of Dartmouth's 3-pointers to lead the Big Green.

DOWN THE STRETCH
  • After BU missed a pair of 1-and-1 looks at 1:22 and 1:05, respectively, Vilarino hit both free throw attempts at 55 seconds for the 71-62 advantage.
  • Foye came right back with a 3-pointer on Dartmouth's next possession and watched BU shoot 7-of-12 at the line the rest of the game.
  • Facing a 74-67 deficit with 34 seconds remaining, Samuels scored on a layup and followed BU's 1-of-2 performance at the line with two free throws at 23 seconds to pull within four (75-71).
  • Foye flushed the game's final trey at 15 seconds to cut BU's lead to 76-74.
  • BU went 1-of-2 at the line again and was then clinging to a one-point lead after Samuels scored again at 5.8s on a contested layup.
  • McCoy added a free throw, and the defense sealed the two-point victory by not allowing Dartmouth to get off a quality shot attempt.
THE SETUP
  • The first half featured three lead changes with Samuels giving Dartmouth its final advantage 55 seconds into the first half, 3-2, off a layup.
  • Vilarino responded with one of his own to spark an 8-0 spurt capped by Whyte's layup and free throw at 15:24.
  • After junior Andrew Petcash flushed his lone 3-pointer at 11:28 for the 16-9 advantage, Dartmouth chipped away and used back-to-back layups by Samuels (8:01) and Ian Sistare (7:22) to cut the deficit to one (18-17).
  • Sophomore Jack Hemphill came right back with a layup to ignite the 11-0 run that saw McCoy set up 3-pointers by Harper and Whyte.
  • McCoy added another assist by feeding Mahoney for a layup on BU's final possession of the half, which ended with Dartmouth's Ian Carter going 1-of-2 at the charity stripe to cut BU's lead to 39-29.
  • The Terriers' lead remained at 10 points (43-33) with 16:25 remaining before Aaryn Rai scored four straight points on a jumper and two free throws to help Dartmouth go on a 11-2 run capped by Chris Knight's layup at 12:59.
  • Dartmouth never retook the lead, as Mahoney followed McCoy's layup with a tip-in and free throw.
  • Whyte came up with 3-pointers at 7:38 (55-46) and 5:22 (60-52), respectively.
  • McCoy extended the lead to 69-58 on two free throws at 1:32 before Dartmouth began the comeback.
GAME NOTES
  • Mahoney (1,192 pts.) is two points away from overtaking LeVar Folk ('99) for sole possession of the No. 18 slot in the BU record book for career points.
  • BU shot over 50 percent for the third time this season and became the first opponent to shoot over 48.9 percent against Dartmouth this season.
  • McCoy topped his previous high of five assists, set four times, by three against just one turnover.
  • Helped by junior Sukhmail Mathon's fourth career 3-pointer, the Terriers went 7-of-16 from behind the arc after missing the final 18 attempts in last Saturday's 84-79 overtime loss at Binghamton.
  • Freshman Ethan Brittain-Watts saw 17 minutes of action after missing the previous three games due to injury.
  • BU hosted Dartmouth for the first time since claiming a 79-58 win in 2001.
