Men's Basketball to End Non-Conference Slate at Merrimack Sunday Night

BOSTON – In the final matchup of 2019 and the non-conference slate, the Boston University men's basketball team will visit Merrimack on Sunday with a 6 p.m. start time.
 
Over the summer, the Warriors elevated its athletic department from Division II status to become the eighth NCAA Division I basketball program in Massachusetts by joining the Northeast Conference.
 
TERRIER TIDBITS
  • Seeking its first three-game win streak of the year, BU is coming off a 78-76 home win over Dartmouth and 74-62 victory at UMass Lowell.
  • BU held the River Hawks to a season-low 31.3 FG% on Dec. 21 for its second road victory of the season following a 78-70 win at South Carolina back on Nov. 19.
  • Senior Max Mahoney (15.2 ppg, 7.3 rpg) is averaging 21.6 ppg, 8.2 rpg and 69.4 FG% over the last six games.
  • Sophomore Walter Whyte is second in both points (12.7 ppg) and rebounds (6.2 rpg).
  • Junior Javante McCoy (9.6 ppg, 3.3 apg, 3.1 rpg) has dished out 13 combined assists in the last two games against one turnover.
  • Junior Sukhmail Mathon (4.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg) posted a career-high 13 rebounds in his first start of the season at UML after earning his first career double-double two weeks prior at Binghamton (15 pts., 12 rebs.).
  • The Terriers are averaging 69.4 ppg and 44.1 FG% while holding opponents to 70.5 ppg and 44.1 FG%.  
SCOUTING MERRIMACK
  • The Warriors are 2-0 at home with a 69-60 victory over Army West Point and 110-16 win over Division III school Lesley.
  • Merrimack shared two non-conference opponents with BU, posting a 60-58 win at UMass Lowell and 55-46 loss to Dartmouth.
  • 6-foot-4 guard Jaleel Lord owns a team-high 10.1 ppg, just ahead of 6-foot-0 guard Juvaris Hayes (10.0 ppg), who is adding a team-high 5.5 apg, 5.1 rpg and 3.0 spg.
  • Merrimack is averaging 62.0 ppg and 40.0 FG% while holding opponents to 61.9 ppg and 43.4 FG%.
SERIES HISTORY
  • BU is 6-0 all-time in the series, first claiming a win in 1968 (80-54) and last defeating the Warriors in 1984 (94-71).
  • Though they are meeting for the first time in over three decades, the two schools are quite familiar with one another due to their ice hockey programs being members of Hockey East.
