Men's Ice Hockey Welcomes Pair of Newcomers for Second Semester
December 28, 2019 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - The Boston University men's ice hockey team has two new faces as it gets ready for the second half as head coach Albie O'Connell and his staff have added forward Wilmer Skoog and goaltender Ashton Abel to the 2019-20 roster.
Skoog, a native of Sweden, has excelled in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) over the past season and a half, totaling 84 points (35g, 49a) in 88 contests, including playoffs. This season with the Maryland Black Bears, Skoog was leading the league in points per game at 1.38 (15-18--33) in 24 games. He was NAHL Forward of the Month in September, recording 15 points in eight games. Skoog played the 2018-29 season with the Minot Minotaurs and tallied 47 points (18g, 29a) in the regular season before adding four more points in the playoffs. Prior to coming to the United States, Skoog spent three years with the Västerås Hockey Club in Sweden, culminating with a stint in Division I during the 2017-18 season.
Arguably the top netminder in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, Abel has been dominant this season for the Okotoks Oilers, posting a 2.16 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage in 26 games. He was undefeated in his first 17 starts (16-0-1) and had three shutouts during the stretch while being named AJHL Defensive Player of the Week twice. Abel joined Okotoks after two seasons with the Calgary Mustangs of the AJHL, where he played 72 contests and put up a .909 save percentage during the 2018-19 season. Before playing the AJHL, Abel was a member of the Grande Prarie Midget Storm midget team in 2016-17, putting up a .923 save percentage and 2.82 goals-against average.
The new Terriers will make their debut on Sunday when BU hosts Concordia for an exhibition at Walter Brown Arena. The game starts at 5 p.m. and all proceeds will benefit the Travis Roy Foundation.
